Watching My 90 Year Old Daddy, Who Was Very Active, 30 Year Retired Army,3 Time War Vet, Slowly Fade Away in a Fantasy World Called Dementia!
You held my hand when I was child, You took me back when I had run wild, Throughout my life you served our country well, Without complaint and you never failed.Wisdom you had and wisdom you kept, Even in tough times you never wept. As I grew older so did you, Until one day you had no clue. Was I your child, your sibling or friend? With searching eyes you'd look then grin. I know your face, sometimes you'd say, With a look of confusion you would walk away. My heart is breaking as I watch you go, Day by day your mind's growing slow. So I decided, whether you knew me or not, I'd do what I could, be it little or lot. My daddy would have me to help him along, To talk, to read or maybe sing him a song. But the best thing of all was to make him laugh, Anything I'd do on his behalf, Smiles and laughter from him I now crave, Creating new memories before the grave. He served his country well and his family too, Now My Sweet Daddy, It's My Turn to Take Care of You!

Very nice tribute. My Mom also had dementia, and I think that it is one of the worst things that can happen to a person. Both the afflicted, and the family caregivers. I wish you and your Dad the best.
It is sad that he may not be able to comprehend this beautiful poem to him. Sometimes we wish we had said these things earlier while people could appreciate them.
