The First Day of School

by Ann Marie Hannon — Read all 4 poems by Ann Marie Hannon

When Lila's Mom can't bring her to the first day of school what can Lila do?? Read this sweet poem, to find out.

Friday, August 9, 2019

Lila loved to learn and play.
She totally enjoyed her pre-school days.

Now it was time to start anew,
Her first day in kindergarten
Was coming true .

Some kids’ Moms
Would bring them to school
But, other’s,
Like Lila’s Mom,
Couldn’t make do.

So, Lila got ready to meet
Her school bus.
She put on her school pack
Did not make a fuss.

She knew
How much
She was loved
By her Mom.
So, taking
The school bus
Meant
She had to
Stay calm.

And Lila’s Mom had told her, .
“I love you so much;
I know you are strong;
You won’t hold a grudge.”

But, on that morning,
After Lila stepped down
From her school bus ride,
She had a frown.

She walked through
The school hall
To her classroom door.
Then for some strange reason
She wasn’t worried anymore.

She had ALMOST cried.
But, you won’t be surprised
Lila became strong
Once she wiped her eye.

She made friends quickly,
She joined in to sing.
She also listened to teacher
Who said not to bring
Any problems or worries
Just continue to sing.

So, would you believe,
When the first day ended
There were only good memories
And all those
Were splendid!
Later when Lila
Stepped down from the bus,
She responded to Mom,
Without one little fuss.

“How was your day, Lila?
I know you were sad.”
Lila looked up at Mom,
And smiled and said,

“At first, I was sad.
I missed you so much.
But then , I turned
SAD to EXCITED
And that helped a bunch!”
Then, with a big, jump ,
That made Mom surprised,
Lila beamed and repeated,
“SAD to EXCITED!!!!
It made me, ENERGIZED!”

Mom understood
And that’s how it just went.
From from that day on,
Lila stayed very content.

She would continue to turn
SAD to EXCITED
And you can be sure
She stayed really happy,
And that was the cure!

She’s a smart little wonder
Confident and brave,
So, whenever you’re
Worried, please
Don’t misbehave.

Think of Lila instead
And how you can win.
Turn SAD to
EX - CIT – ED ……………..
Don’t ever give in.

A cute and reassuring tale for the little ones in gentle rhyme makes a fun poem. Lila's solution to her normal fear of leaving Mom is one that other children can learn from. I love your ending "don't ever give in". Inspirational!

lovely overview of that milestone day in Little Learner lives!

many of my students brought themselves to class if mom was working or otherwise unable to come with them.

a warm welcome, children to play with, stories to hear, songs to sing!

I'm not sure I really like retirement! enjoyed the read

never stop writing

A cute little story poem. Lila seems to be given a lot of responsibility from the time she steps on that bus until she opens the classroom door. Aren't first-day kindergartners greeted at the bus? When I was in college on the first day, I sometimes had trouble finding the classroom!

If only mothers could just be able to tell their worried children to turn their sad into excitement. I don't think it is as easy as that. It might be as easy as them wearing a poem like this, or it might not. If the child is going to be able to be happy in new, strange situations like the first day of kindergarten, mother's have to start teaching them how to do that long before the first day arrives.

There will be many more first times to come, and Lila is off to a good start with the right attitude.
