Death is final except for God's intervention and taking death to heaven to help us live evermore.

You are right. When the body goes, there is no sustenance to the soul (brain activity), and both die together. It is wishful thinking, at best, to think that the soul (spirit, essence, thought processes) can exist without a functioning brain.
