Fear Not The Gloom

Death moved solemnly through the cool glade,
And regarded not the beauty of the dappled shade,
Nor the sweet perfume the flowers made.

With pangs of guilt they came to pray,
Almost by stealth before the light of day,
As if light must not touch where dark death lay.

As if yesterday words echoed in each bowed head
As each remembered when He had said,
“Let the dead, bury their dead.”

Let the living come follow me.
But surely now that cannot be,
Did the journey not end upon that tree?

So each rushed on, but feared yet to tread
Behind the rock that hid the dead,
Lest they behold what they most dread.

But ‘tis death who in dark crevices lay.
‘Tis death who will not roll the stone away.
‘Tis death who fears the light of day.

And an angel sat by the open tomb,
As light streamed in to an empty room.
“Take hold the light – and fear not the gloom.”

And their fear turned to rejoicing!
How well you portrayed their emotions. I think you should write a "Part Two" and elaborate on how they reacted to the empty tomb.
Beautiful.

I find myself now with so little time for the things I enjoy, and seldom the chance to read such fine verse as this. I must say that this piece was indeed a soft pleasure to read Sir...thanks for the soft journey.
