Depression

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

Depression is a difficult illness for both the sufferer and the family and friends who support the sufferer.

For those who suffer, you're in my prayers.

Thursday, July 24, 2008

One minute you’re happy; the next, you are sad
A few minutes later, you’re angry, then glad
In the course of an hour, you’ve laughed, yelled and cried
As the mood swings slowly toss your sense aside
Without even knowing, you’ve sent friends away
Unable to control what you do or say
Then, you sit and wonder why you’re on your own
The world seems so empty when you’re all alone.

Irrational thoughts swirl like a hurricane
You act upon feelings you cannot explain
Then, suffer the burdens that come in their wake
No power to grasp the plans you chose to make
Your heart succumbs quickly, weighted by your grief
Nothing at all seems to offer relief
Once more, you resort to crying through your dread
You close all the curtains and return to bed.

One minute you’re sitting on top of the earth
The next, you are probing for some sense of worth
You sit and are grateful for your friends who care
Then, worry you’ve become a load they must bear
The anguish you feel rips you apart, inside
Stealing your emotions; deflating your pride
The mind seems trapped inside fifty prison cells
Such is the existence where depression dwells.

Wonderful, well written and thought provoking work,Jill.
It paints a dire, but truthful picture of "the norm"for far too many.
Continued success/

Very very well written. Depression is a difficult thing to describe to someone who has never experienced it but I would say this piece would give a very clear picture.

Jill, you have written it so well, you should have it published! There are many kinds of depression. The kind that comes after a death is bad, but it usually doesn't last, hopefully! If it does there is need for help. I too have been remiss in reading and commenting due to the problem of diabetes causing eye problems. Hopefully it will improve with time, but it's slow going. Please take care.

Love,
Eileen

Well put. Who hasn't experienced it. It is sad when it's the norm rather than the exception.
God Bless,

As a depressed person fighting it each day, I am glad you put it in words. Just like I feel is how this poem states it. It is so true it is a bothersome problem and to be dealt with possitive thoughts as much as you can. Tears one moment, laughter the next, no in between feelings.

There are times when we all have a taste of depression and some of us can fight it off and move on with smiles while others become angry and argumentive. You have explained this perfectly Jill and for many who don't realize what the problem is can easily understand by reading your words. Thank you for sharing.

You've captured the feelings of this illness/disease perfectly. I sometimes get depressed myself; try not to stay in this frame of mind. I'd much rather be happy. Good write, Jill; brava!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Burleson, Karen Lynn. :)
