The Heavenly Banquet

A couplet poem about vanity and how it tries to rush us by.

The King gave the great call;

it's best for you not to stall.

Please come to my grand banquet;

it's something you could never regret.

Everything is now ready;

make haste in a jiffy.

Your lifetime rushes you by;

just pronounce the aye-aye.

Excuses, excuses, here they come;

but the vanity can't you overcome?

Wait awhile, wait awhile, my affairs are very volatile;

can't you see I must maintain my earthly profile!

The stocks need attention, I cannot come;

now I've married a wife, I'll come undone.

Just bought new property, please excuse me;

If I don't acquire possessions I'll be a peewee.

At the end of the ages, the King will be angry;

He invited many, but they proved themselves unworthy.

The poor and the hungry entered, they were fit;

those who were invited were deprived a heavenly banquet.

The poor in this poem means the poor in spirit. The rich ones are those who have great worldly wealth and are not rich towards God and the spiritual riches.

I don't quite get your poem. Are you saying that the King only sent invitations to the rich folks who were all too busy to attend the banquet and he didn't invite the poor and the hungry and yet they showed up and the King suddenly found out they fit the banquet because they were poor and hungrey? I didn't know I have to be poor and hungry in order to be "fit" for the banquet. - Don't worry! I'm just thinking my thoughts for now.
