A poem about what we deem important at the last...

An Immortal Memory

What we have, what we gave

What we found, what we lost

What we were and who we are

All of these can be found

lingering at the moments end

Acquisition, requisition

tunnel vision, fight for position

Buy Take Steal Hoard

Objects

gathering dust upon the shelf

Look at him, look at her

Look at them, Look at us

Look at them looking back at us

So popular

yet that vanity means nothing now

Well respected, well connected

Educated, elevated

A pillar in my community

My prestige

cannot save me on this day

Silver and Gold

Cash and endless credit

Wealth of a kind beyond measure

My fortune

will not be joining me there

I stand alone

nearly breathless

at the edge of the void

eternally intimidating

all of that nothing staring back

My soul stripped bare

My clothing tatters and rags

My hair fighting against the winds of this change

To one thing

Do I  clutch with all of my might

Not set on the ground

and not in my hands

but in my mind

a memory

even at the last cannot be wrest from my grip

Of all things

to choose to carry

to the absolute unknown

a memory

to be my only companion

We arrive as we depart

alone

Try as we do to get close

alone

is how most of us live

I was lucky

I made a connection

I found someone

someone with whom

I could truly share myself

Though it was brief

not even a year

I will take it with me

from this place

beyond the edge of the unknown

The last moment

perspective on all that I was

The most personal

The most revealing

The most delicate moment of any life

The memory

it was of you

all that I saw in your eyes Angel

All I need

from here to eternity

To me this reads as a march, with cadence that neither follies nor falters and moves along with a wide aura of surety and with particles of earth-world falling off with each step, leaving the essence alone at destination - experience. "all of that nothing staring back" at your everything. ~~ Diana

Beautifully penned. We, too often, get caught up in the 'dat-to-day' and forget what is truly important. Memories are a treasures to keep in our hearts.

Intensely emotional and philosophical. I like that. You stuck to the truth and nailed it. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, you can't take it with you. Spiritual truths loom larger as we grow older and look back at what we've hoarded and consumed in our lifetime.
