Medellin Remembered

by Myra Wexler Darwish — Read all 62 poems by Myra Wexler Darwish

A poetic description of Medellin, Colombia during a visit in 2008.

Friday, October 31, 2014

(In honor of our visit in 2008, when we celebrated our grandson’s 1st birthday)

Her mantle is green,

Bountifully seen,

From the airplanes’

Tiny window.

An Andean gem

Resplendent in spring,

Showing pride …

In her beautiful Antioquian countryside.

The verdant hills

Surrounded us all,

Collectively sighing,

Their welcoming call.

Medellin has known

Too much pain,

Searing and deep,

Endured with great shame.

A country once shunned

By those in fear,

Now begins to re-flower

As travelers appear.

Her people, the Paisa,

A culture apart,

Are unique to the region

Pride comes from their hearts.

Her heroes…

Botero and Gabriel Garcia Marquez,

The great artists of form

And words powerfully said.

A more simple life,,

With a rhythm of its own.

Time flows there in Kairos,

Like the language of a poem.

As I walked through her streets

Both old and new,

I saw hope for her future,

Prosperity for the few.

Healing is changing

Evil to good,

A better life for her people,

Understood.

With  hopes ignited,

For her future success.

A city like no other…

Uniquely expressed.

Your poem makes it a wonderful place to visit. I certainly hope it's also a place where people can live without the fear of repression from those who profit from terror.

Meddling needs to be history in Medellin. Keeping it as one of the worlds best cities to live/visit in.
