Family Crisis

by Debra (DM) Kraft — Read all 67 poems by Debra (DM) Kraft

Family ties can grow unraveled under the strain of a crisis.

Family Crisis

Servitude or abandonment.
We’ve done both -- you and I and the army
that came at dusk when I’d already had enough of the fight.

Yes. I passed the baton.
And for that have been branded a traitor.
Seven years of holding the fort meant nothing
at the end of the day
when the cavalry finally arrived to take control
to push me out of the way and then label me the villain
for allowing it to happen -- all of it.

Don’t you see it yet?
The enemy at the door was always
avoidance
ignorance
passivity.

Now all the sludge we’ve kept hidden
under fertile soils of imagination
has sprouted roots and is growing wild
budding flowers of regret
amidst thorns of assumption.

Assume I am
too busy to listen
too angry to help
too tired to care
too out of touch to understand.

Assume

my thoughts lack value
my ideas lack substance

my objectivity lacks humanity.

You see a different realm of reality
one that ignores the peripheral
where I stand on a precipice
overlooking it all.

I could have made things easier for you.
Seven years of experience opened my eyes
to things you’ll never see
to lifesaving
patient
strategies
that enabled me to rise with each new day
to fight the slow and steady fight.

My tortoise to your hare.

My years became your months.
Or weeks.
You felt thrown to the fire
never accepting
that I sat by with water
awaiting your call.

It never came.
