Life in the Carnival of Men

by Debra (DM) Kraft — Read all 67 poems by Debra (DM) Kraft

Sometimes
or Life in the Carnival of Men.

Sometimes the ride is wild,
the kind of wild ride that can be

fun, exciting, exhilarating,
a roller coaster that twists and turns,
throwing me sideways and swiveling me ‘round and upside down,
but never threatening my security, my safety…my life--

or it can be frantic, terrifying, heart-stoppingly cold,
a raging river plunging me through rapids
with neither life vest, nor boat, nor even a single person ashore
to hear my call for help.

And sometimes the ride is smooth

the kind of smooth that flows around me like slow and easy jazz,
a saxophone playing behind a bass baritone DJ
a fire keeping the room cozy and warm
a glass of fine wine that flows through me
giving me succor
allowing me to drift into a mellow, blissful dream.

But sometimes

It sits frozen

Idling on empty
and leaving me stranded
in a house full of mirrors.

That is quite a ride! I hope it is more of the exhilarating and less of the terrifying and frozen.
