Remembering the meaning of Independence Day

The spirit of independence
Is alive and well today.
As Old Glory flies both far and wide
Across the USA.

And along with all the fireworks
And parades that line the streets,
A united front, a common heart
For freedom proudly beats.

For this year the fourth is somehow
Just a little more profound.
As our soldiers fight for liberty
From ocean, air and ground.

To defend our soil, to protect
The independent way,
Are courageous men and women
For whose safety we must pray.

And remember, too, the sacrifice
Of those who’ve gone before
Many gave their time, their limbs, their lives
All in the name of war.

So as we sunbathe on our decks
With a lemonade or two,
We should celebrate our liberty
Beneath red, white and blue.

A holiday which means "no work"
And carefree summer fun
Should in fact mark the occasion
To observe freedoms hard-won.
