When I Look At Her

About a lady I see, but can't bring myself to speak to. A dark poem.

It is hard to imagine

That within what stands before me

With her back to me

The faded denim of her dress

Blowing lightly in the spring breeze

Once beat a hopeful and passionate heart.

And now thick and hateful hide

Far more noticeable

Than the soft supple skin

That is her

Is in itself a banner

The marks

Scars

Bruises

Written in a language

Understood by anyone

If they chose to look closely enough

However, most would rather not

Or wouldn’t dare

More than that simply do not care.

I watch her secretly

She could look you in the eye

But she is afraid that you will see

Something within her

That would stir your pity

She spends her life hiding

From you and me

And the terrible reflection

That the face gives to your emotion

Upon reading her

Is in her estimation

Undeserved

Unwanted

There is more than this to her

This is not what she wants for you to see

She is better than what she fears

That you perceive her to be

And one day, she believes, it will change

She will once again be joyous and free

She will either hit him in the head with a hammer

Or maybe she will win the lottery

admiring life's weathering on the sculpture that is the body and an appreciation of the soul making the sculpture a living being, one as you so directly put it most simply don't care to see. there is a painful truth residing in these lines, drawing the reader in gently to a place that even she would prefer us not go. for perception is the filter we hide behind or allow ourselves to be fooled with. take away the filter, and we see the belief, the quietly clinging hope you paint so vividly that she can still one day be free through action taken in her own hands directly or indirectly. exquisite exploration of poetic people watching.

Your (almost heartrending) insightfulness into this person is impressive Blue. You do have a gift of eyes that "see" beyond the veneer, and into the deeper places. There is much to glean in these sensitive areas of the human condition. Well written ... one of your very best!

Light and Wisdom ...

This is wonderful, Blue. Yes, it's sad, but it's more unfortunate, actually, that she doesn't yet understand her true worth and get out of the terrible situation. All too often, it does end with a hammer or a bullet. This is very well done and, though sad, a distinct pleasure to read.

CJ

Blue,

"...but she is afraid that you will see
something within her
that would stir your pity
she spends her life hiding.........." <------abuse does that.

"she is better than what she fears,
that you perceive her to be.......... <-------empowering!

An excellent, poignant read, excellently penned. I hope she leaves the bum!!!! AND wins the lottery. :)

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Clap clap clap and not the social disease LOL, I loved this one as it strung the reader through the sadness of this women's spirit and then wrappedup with the fact that the jerk she is with deserves nothing less than what the poem suggests. Great story Blue.
