Twelve hour days as an adult education instructor in the most noted ghetto in the 3rd largest city in the United States.

Today a chilly wind curls around

The urban landscape

Last night on my route home

Traveling roads with little light

Silhouette forms

Against approaching darkness

Ripped plywood barriers

From abandoned buildings

Seeking shelter from the cold and rain

I could see the outline

like shadows

Offering a leg up through open windows

Preparing to huddle together

And wait out the approaching storm

Fighting off guilt, I reach my bright warm home

And the love of my family

Their smiling faces beam happiness and health

Waiting to share the warm meal they made for me

I thank a God that I am not certain I believe in

For the food and shelter one more day

And before I sleep I further pray

Giving thanks for the things we are blessed with

And praying He will help me teach men to fish

And I hope He is really there

Hope

Because

Tomorrow will start another day

Once I again I will make my way

Back down the dark roads

To the place

Not far away

Where I teach

In a decayed ghetto

Impoverished

Gripped with desperation

Suffering from neglect and decay

Teaming with underprivledged and angry people

In one of the largest cities in this nation

Your U S of A

As I get out of my car I meet angry glares

People hating me for the color of my skin

and the texture of my hair

Just general hatred nothing personal

But I do not fear

I just glare back

Tell them that class starts at 9

Get your ass to my class and in your seat

Switch that computer on

Because the rest of the day- you are MINE

And one by one they learn enough to leave this place

By God's grace

I hope . . .

I think your attitude is the important thing here to help the underpriviledged learn and improve themselves. Sorrow and pity can go just so far.

Hey Bloo Gurl ...
Keep hoping and working through it.
God's Grace is more prevailing than most understand.
Your construct is palpable - could be any city. Here,
in this vast conurbation called San Diego, its reaching
epidemic proportions.
I surely can relate to those angry glares.

I find your verses very meaningful and soul reaching in depth, Blue. As an educator for over thirty years I can relate to what you express although I have not know such a place as you describe. Love and best wishes,

Regis

Blue -

... Your U S of A .... something wrong here, when apathy rules the ghettos and suburban neighborhoods, when we're more interested in what happens all over the rest of the world, instead of taking care of the problems in our own backyards - powerfully penned excellence, keep reaching out towards them with love. Maybe they'll change. I hope. ... well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I found this deeply meaningful.
"Just general hatred, nothing personal" absolutely chilling lines.
Will there ever be a cure for that cancer?

Well done.

You have been missed!
I have experienced poverty & homelessness
& it is a horrid aloneness to go through...
your poetic expression pierces my heart in remembrance
& knowing that teachers are seen in hatred unnerves my senses...
Hate period has no room & I commend you for your dedication to reach
the minds with the empowerments of growth you offer to implement into them! You are a constructive tool...May You Always Be Safe
& Also May Your Love In Your Heart Spread That Very Seed Into Your Students!
Love & Blessings Always
Vickie
