Calm

Wind gusts, first from the north then the opposite,

Dead branches break and fall.

Rain mixed with snow, blowing sideways, stinging skin.

Thirty-five degrees, feels like five below.

Blankets are quickly buckled on horses,

Already shedding winter hair,

Their bodies ready for spring,

They will eat breakfast in the barn today.

Peace comes as quickly, calm returns to all,

The only sound now the silence of falling snow.

Beauty surrounds all with new white,

Already melting as thirty-five begins to turn to forty.

And I am aware, acutely so,

That this is much like my life,

Such turmoil and angst can overwhelm,

Then the calm is oh so sweet.

Lovely! Absolutely the way life is...I'm awaiting my calm; I've learned through the storms to cherish it!

Your last stanza says it all... Wonderful lesson to an early spring snow.
We had 3 more inches of snow on Sunday night...sigh...most of it melted yesterday, but I hear that we are due for more tonight and tomorrow. Crazy weather! Thanks for the reminder to be grateful for the lessons it teaches me. :~)

Great imagery in this winderful poem Karen. .I could see and feel the snow wilt its wintry blasts. Its good you have a warm place for your horses. You are right ,, turmoil can over whelm , but the calm helps to off set those feelings....M

you've captured this feeling so well, Karen; in the midst of life's turmoils the calm can come in just through the most unexpected and miniscule means to sweep us off our feet and to bathe us with an uncanny equilibrium. Children, I find, are usually associated with such moments... or animals! :)) Something natural and unconscious of their effect, at least. When a breath of air is needed to fill the sails afresh, hopefully we find it's there... xx

You have taken me back to those times when we could see the horses freely romp on winters prairie galas when the sun not quite was over the horizon and from their mouth came out that steam jet to make the picture magical.
Thanks

Ah Karen, I wish I could be there, in the barn with the horses, with a blanket wraped around myself. I can almost hear their baying and snorting sounds, see them shaking the last bit of chill out of their bodies. *Hands her a cup of hot chocolate with plump marshmellows on top* May we both be able to feel that calm which you write so beautifully about.

Wow. Sounds like our Spring, so far! No snow, mind you, but a lot of wind and storms - excellently penned, Karen, makes the calm that much more sweet! Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, and stay safe, Karla.

This time of year can be such a wild combination of winter and summer. We had a major snowstorm last Wednesday with a foot of snow, ttoday it was all gone and I was out in my short sleeves doing yard work. And yes though when we see snow falling this time of year we do grumble but we also sigh with the simple beauty and soft quiet that you so lovingly describe.

hugs

A very interesting write. I think life is meant to be a challenge of undergoing one storm of another because we grow and become wiser with every storm we go through. We don't actually learn when our lives are filled with peace and tranquility. Our problem-solving skills are put to the test whenever the storms of life challenge us. And then--yes--"the calm is oh so sweet."

Karen,

I was actually feeling cold at first and remembering what those eastern winters were like. Than the promise of spring arises towards the end. Very beautifully written piece, and I loved your descriptive words.

Peace comes as quickly, calm returns to all,
The only sound now the silence of falling snow

And it truly can be a marvelous, peaceful moment. But I, too, am ready for Spring.
