This poem was inspired by our monthly sexual assault cold case support group meeting from this past Saturday. These are not only brave and beautiful women but survivors of sexual assault as well.

You are brave because you made a decision that you were no longer rapes’ victim
You gathered the remains of your sanity and decided that today that life must grant you your freedom.

I saw you smile with your sisterhood and knew that you would be ok
Then you shed a tear alone and I felt your pain from that day

But in spite of the cruelty of this world and the hardening of men hearts
You adorned yourself with dignity and decided you will breathe again because life is too short

Even though the pain of rape cuts deep and the agony of its’ fear brings drama
You have took the first step of healing by coming forward, you can celebrate life after this trauma

I know you will never forget the devastation because you can not ignore what happened to you that day
You were not only violated and abused but left alone in a world of disgrace

And even though something precious was taken by force you survived to share your story
You are here now still strong and beautiful and I share with you in your glory

You are my sister because we have a common tie, we are all here for the same reason
Although we may be sorrowful for the bind that brought us together we still rejoice even if it’s only for a season.

I admire you because you have been through a lot and you encourage me every time that we gather
I watch you as you overcome your fears, I experience your healing through laughter.

I love you my sister because you let me into your hearts and now your blood flows through my veins
You are my strength and my inspiration and part of the reason that I can now breathe again.

I think you are very positive in this world that learns hate. There is so much power in what you are doing. I am impressed because when we lose our breath the gateway to our interaction in this world only God can bring us back. I have been very alarmed by the violence that so many women continue to go through. I know what happens but yet each time it does I am again shocked. I haven't written for about four years and it feels so brutal and silent. I have always spoken out about abuse but you made realize that public acknowledgment of survival is what get you to stand again. I thank you a survivor.

Thanks for sharing. For whatever reason we much cherish each season. So I thank you for releasing such encouraging words admist a world so cold. Someone, somewhere needs exactly what you're giving so keep up the great work.
