Oak Roots

An observation, a memory, a word of respect for some of the best whoever worked the earth for all of us--they were their own culture.

See out the broad window,

the long oak benches,

patched and pieced together

from broken pallets,

but done well in the hard,

straight-grained pattern

of this particular wood,

and the old men

who sit  upon the benches,

bent and gnarled

with the hard work of their years,

knees and elbows knobbed

with the strain of it,

the wrinkles running deeply

down the sun-browned leanness

of their long-grained faces,

dressed in uniforms of their labor,

denim overalls and blue jeans,

the seed caps or straw hats.

See how the younger strangers

walk by with little notice,

or stand nearby without acknowledgements,

species of another forest,

but the elders scoot aside

for one of their own.

Yes, his eyes gleam with

the pleasure of  their company

as they make room

even to squeeze him in

with smiles or nods of their heads,

a fellow tiller and child

of black soil mellow

but demanding for know-how

before it yields.

Yes,

their roots run deep,

in fellowship for seasons

long, long ago,

and evermore today.

You use your pen like an artist uses his brush. Beautiful imagery and metaphor.

This is wonderful and I love the extended metaphor. The thoughtfulness and acknowledgement that run through this poem make it that much more effective. This is replete with splendid lines; your use of language is very skillful and brushed with the stroke of an artist's heart.

Beautiful Jerry.I am hoping some of the younger generation will respect these fine people who went through so much and have wisdom to share. That is my dream- that younger people will realize how wonderful people in that generation are, and that the older generation will be willing to share their wisdom and also learn from the younger generation. Oh yes! That would be great! You write this so beautifullly. Thank you.

With Love,
Cindy

Soul kin straight grained and true, not many share that wisdom now, but you my friend with exquisite art of such picturesque beauty and metaphor. Blessings! Jasmin Horst

Beautiful, Jerry. My father belonged to that generation your poem speaks of, and as his child I saw in him and his peers what you describe. There was fellowship in those days of a kind that current generations can not even imagine. Making a living was the mode of the times, and since there were no electronics and entertainment gadets, people socialized, respected each other and enjoyed others' company. Good write.

My how I've missed your writing! You always have the best imagery and sustained metaphors that run throughout the whole poem... This one is a special one. It reminds me of my dad...watching him talk to other farmers and working with wood too... hee, hee...
Good to read you again, Jerry!
