I've had my down times, too, and the cold of winter doesn't always help. But, I'm still here, and you're still here, and my hope is that you'll join me in saying we're going to be here some more.

It pleases me to see,

snow on the bark

of that old tree,

and the way it clings there,

half-thawed and refrozen

to a semi-permanent structure,

and even the way

the fat, red squirrels

and our orange-striped cats,

superb climbers,

can slip a little

trying to navigate up

the lately slippery trunk.

The tree has lived its purpose

as it passes into the massive presence

of renowned old age,

where even children seek retreat

in warmer times,

but renowned only because

it endured.

It’s a common enough tree,

although some would call it

as beautiful as

any national monument.

Its leaves have sprouted out in spring,

and fallen in the fall,

and it’s reliably pollinated

fellow trees,

for at least 100 years.

One hundred years—

It’s much older than me,

and I like to think it offers

the sage advice of the elderly,

that though the snow

of white hair and beard

may cover the peel of my skin,

I’m still required to endure,

and let others climb

to the top of my mind

for what comfort and beauties

my spare branches offer.

Old tree, I think and hope

you may be

a lot like me,

and I feel in our hearts,

that you may be,

cut off to stumps

many times

before we really started to grow.

Our shortcomings and discomforts

have been many,

but one thing is for sure,

we’re both still here

because our instincts have been

to endure, endure, and endure.

How many times, old tree,

can I say to those

who are disheartened and distressed,

that one big part

of the lesson of life

is to endure, endure, and endure,

never give up,

never cave in,

endure, endure, and endure.

Enjoyed your tree analogy. There is a great need for the wisdom of respect, both to our environment and to our elders. M.True

The ancient symbolism of the tree! Tree of life. Cosmological tree. Tree of the shamans and visionaries. Alchemical tree - silver or gold. Genetic trees. Trees that process the atmosphere. Little wonder the ancient Celtic bards, druids and ovates described themselves as memebrs of 'groves'. This poem captures the ancient widsom of the tree.

I love the way you have "personified" the tree, Jerry; and the philosophy that you have shared via your verses here. Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Regis

Your poetry over the last few months has taken on a mellow tone... one of languishing down memory lane. I like it... love it, really. Love the comparison between the tree and yourself. The last stanza is really powerful. Something we all need to hear now and then...

Oh Jerry, i know life is tough sometimes and this deeply meaningful piece is aptly written at a time when everyone (including me!) i know seems to have to endure whatever life offers and to wherever it may take them. Faith and perseverance are keys to reach our dreams. Another fine poetry. Speaks volume to those who can relate. Best wishes to you, my dear friend.

Love,
Sheri

It's a gift to be allowed to endure, that carries in the bones, the centuries, the march of time, death too has to be endured, but I'm afraid today it's, here today and gone tomorrow, does not lend much credance to endurance anymore, you were one of the lucky ones, like your tree, though I hope its seeds, haven't all been pissed on by the fertilizer called greed. Bless you! Jasmin Horst

The opening stanza - overture - sets a light yet caring mood, squirrels and cats slipping - funny and perfect - and then you raise the bar and a grand theme plays and it's eloquent. Among your finest, Jerry, definitely.

That last stanza says it all, Jerry. This poem kind of reminds me of one I wrote called "The Old Oak Tree". Nicely done. I enjoyed the read.
