How's Heaven, Grampa?

I never got to say good-bye, which is one of those tear jerking statements that sell well to the "Tuesdays with Morrey" crowd. I just wanted to write this. He was a neat guy.

Hi Grampa

How's Heaven?

Things are good here.

I was thinking of you
wondering how Gran'ma was doing.

I don't know if I
believe in heaven.
I gave up on God when
I gave up on religion.

I am not sure those are
the same thing.

I miss you sometimes
when I hear
an engine roar or
a long story

Laughter.

I always wondered
if you liked me.

We didn't get to spend
a lot of time together.

Remember the canon you
wanted to build?
The airplane you did build?

Remember you said fish know food
is on the beach?

I'm sorry I didn't visit
you in the hospital.
I don't know why I didn't

Part of me says
I didn't want to see you
that way.

Part of me says
I was a self absorbed cock
that couldn't take the time.

Part of me thought,
that maybe you wouldn't
want me there.

I remember
the steam engine shows.

the VW bugs you said looked like
a squash that was flipped over.

That your grandfather fought
a tank with a sword.

I would have liked to have
known you better and
for you to have known
me better too.

But, I have a picture of you
on my work bench, and
sometimes when I am afraid
of messing up I think
that you might help me.

Its okay if you can't
as there may not be a heaven
anyway.

Did Jacob make it
up there?

I heard that dogs can't come
up but, if you buy into
the supernatural, why not
let a dog in.

I see you
working in the shop
or loading me down with
wood to fill the stove.

I remember your laughter
and hope they let you tell
jokes in heaven.

If there is a heaven.

I sure would like to see you again.

Loved your "Tuesday w/ Morrie" dig. I was forced to read that book & gagged all the way through it. I liked the poem even better, though. You have a strong, true voice.
Thanks,
Leo
