What was my mother?
A contradiction

She was grace
And warmth
And love and faith

She was hard
As stone
And soft as lace

Mother lay down
The law
And mother
Made life fun

She walked me to school
That very first day
She stayed long enough
To wipe my tears away


I wanted to go home!
I did not want to stay
Mother said no
And walked away!

I felt so alone
So very scared
But when I glanced
Out the window
I spotted her there
Hiding behind
A big oak tree
Crying, as she
Watched me

I was her baby
And SHE felt alone
She waited until
It was time to walk me home!

This was my mother
Who laid down the law
Who tried to be stern
But loved us
Through all of life’s turns

A walking contradiction
Of laws and love
