Ah the angst of the young how well do I remember.

 

(For JaSira’s daughter age 13 who is taunted by schoolmates because she changed her hairstyle to a natural one)

( 72 years of age who wears her hair in locks)

 

You stand at the threshold of tomorrow.

The future I shall never see

So stand up boldly and stand up for me.

Be a proud Black girl for all to see

You are beautiful and it’s all naturally.

From the hair on your head to the tips of your toes

You are truly beautiful and everyone knows.

Wear your crown and begin walking tall.

You are a Queen to be amidst the small.

Those who are mean it is easy to see

Are really just filled with envy.

You are soooo right, loved this, excellent poem- my best friend, who is white, has dreadlocks, and you would NOT believe what some adults say to her, (an adult version of teasing), you would think she was from outer space or something with the looks she gets and I always wonder how people become so small-minded and sad. I think it is great what you are doing by writing this for JaSira's daughter. Blessings to you, Michelle xxxxxxxxx

such pride and strength! What a beautiful thing to walk in pride knowing who you are in the world--i applaud this youngster--there is one child, a youngster in our school of 700 jr high children who has done the same--after a bit of teasing without wavering the child is left alone about the hairstyle and is quite popular.
