Truly words for each of us to help with whatever means we have...be it kindness, or money, or just beautiful words!
As my sister you make me very proud, although don't blame Mom! :-)
Now I understand why, we were thinking and writing going up the same street, more modern we become less we thing its necessary to thank Him.
Even we have a drive-thru churches, a Sunday's PC (computer) Mass and last but not least TV Mass in the comfort of your home so you don't need to attend Mass on winter weather or very hot summer days.
For that I wrote about the empty churches.
Well, I don't give in to speech that asks for money because the church needs funds to build this, or to maintain that. I give to the poor to help the poor because they ARE the ones who need money most.
You don't just give to the church for the sake of you yourself may one day go to heaven, you give because you want to help someone who is really in need, regardless of the thought of yourself going to heaven or not. God will be the judge of that when the day comes.
The homeless man in the sandals is the sign for everyone in the church to know to whom they should give their money to. You give because of the thought you want to give to help someone, you don't give because only for the thought of going to heaven - this is too selfish.

Ah, Bonnie, you have caught the essence of the people-problem here.
It is not about money. It is not about God. It is about people living in doubt and spiritual disarray. Here we are at church because it is what we do on Sundays. The preacher is turning us off by working to build guilt in us. Who is that shabby guy in sandals - a homeless person? We give until it hurts to try and make the guilt go away. It does not go away and we leave angry. The homeless man, Jesus, has departed sadly.
Stats. For a number of years, the congregations of the Christian churches in America have been emptying out, thinning out. Why? You have the answer in this poem's title. I am not smiling.
Well myself I don't believe that toweering castles of granite with stained glass windows, central heating and air conditioning, and art work in some of them to rival what could be found in the Louvre is quite what Jesus had in mind when he told someone to build him a church...but I am agnostic so that is only my viewpoint.
Much to ponder here, Bonnie, well done. Usually it's the poor who tithe, gives until it hurts ... what infuriates me are these charletans dressed in fancy clothes, wearing big ole rings, sitting on gold thrones, who preach the prosperity message: "send money and God will give you a new house/car/money/etc., praise Jesus." Makes me sick. I didn't think God was a genie!!! There ought to be a law! *stepping off soapbox* Sorry about that, Bonnie. Your poem is excellent.
