I asked my burdened heart

And this answer came:

Because love is standing

Rooted to a soaring precipice

Naked to the high winds there

Vulnerable to every gust

And beset by terrible phobias

But dazzled! So dazzled! --

Why do we run to this pain?

(Dart like maddened things, eager

To inhabit that cryptic space?)

I asked my despairing heart

And this answer came:

Because better the windswept promontory

With danger and a sweeping view

Of the mystery of those distant hills

Than stumbling, sightless and alone

Over rock-strewn terrain below

No unguent for the burn.
