This won best poem of the year and was published in the High Plains Register, the literary magazine for Laramie County Community College

With a rush, the sea approaches,
Breaks and then retreats.

It grows again and rushes on,
Relentless, booming, beats.

The rolling, crashing, hissing surf,
The thunder of the waves.
It bounces off the rocky cliff,
It swells then starts to fade.

The ocean's heartbeat, strong and clear,
A chorus on the shore.
The echoes ringing, far and near,
Will haunt there evermore.

It resonates within the heart,
Held captive by the soul.
It paints a picture of the lives,
Of humans on the whole.

As water gathers we are born,
Our lives go rushing on.
Ever shoreward, losing speed,
To crash and then be gone.

The single echoed imprint tolls,
A fading, token sound.
The waves retreat, begin again,
Rush on to foaming crown.

The echoes come, then fade anew,
Are born to end once more.
The ancient, ceaseless, rythmic beat,

The sea's eternal roar.
