those old enough remember
when that night ran wild

and its roar was screams
of scores of costumed kids

shrieking "trick or treat!"
their feet were paws

of a creature who roamed
dark hills until the last

sliver of moonlight
slipped behind thickening

shades of roiling soot.
rumors of razor blades

in apple cores were nonexistent
like needles in candy bars,

but everybody thought
they were true .

now that night is behind
bars of outrage.

children still parade in plumage
but now their roar

is little more than a growl
less audible than a howl

as they amble in bright day
like declawed animals gone astray

doors still open to their cries
but they have no

ferocious appetites to sate.
the hunger for the thrill

is about as strong
as a ball of yarn

for they have nothing else
to do behind these bars

now that they no longer
roam beneath the stars.

This is so sad. I remember back when my grade school would parade in costume down the neighborhood streets of Glendale, MO. Long time ago!
Lovely and fun memories. Weren't we lucky?

Halloween in broad daylight just ain't Halloween, my dear, accurate, melancholy, amazingly astute MP. Every generation has its reasons behind the expression "good old days"... how sad that this is among ours. Sigh... you have such a gift for words, even when they bring a tear... or, perhaps, especially when they do that. love, katydid xox.

Great write. If I had kids, I don't think I'd want them out. It's a shame, I lovedhalloween when I was a kid.

Agree with you and with Ed K in his review, and I remember not worrying about wandering the streets of my home town . the shore, never worried about what might happen, no parents along, no cars parked down the street waiting for me to finish at this house or that, never had we to worry, each house was a fortress of parents known to us all...times certainly HAVE changed, unfortunately...thanks for posting such a good memory, MP, Peace, Ed & Rufuz

its a shame when we have to look at each piece of candy to be sure it is not tampered with, we can't let the kids go into houses, the older kids can't roam around later than the little ones like we did as kids

A fantastic view of how we neutered this holiday, and if you would I'd love to see a version of how we also destroyed Christmas,in fact all the holidays are now ghosts of what they used to be, and I wonder if anyone asks themselves why? Sorry , but you stirred me up, which is a compliment to your poetry!;-)

Yep, the evils of a cruel hearted society has even taken the kiddish fun from Halloween too. We feel as though we have to protect our children from whatever lurks out there, and so we've chosen to protect them in a manner that cuts them away completely from even the hint of harm.
I too remember how much fun it was...but sadly that is no more.
Thanks for the reminder...

A powerfully sad write, Mountain Poet.

I was one of those youngsters that roamed the dark hills and joyously wandered under those eerie Halloween skies many many moons ago. And I agree with you completely; as I watch today's children mournfully Trick or Treating in the daylight hours; I truly feel sorry for them.

Another powerful example of just how our most violent world is now also robbing our offspring of what should be the joyous rite of childhood.
