Thank you for teaching me why the daylily is so beautiful. It is in its blooms' short lifespan. Something I never knew and your poem brought to view.
We found wild tiger lilies growing by the roadside in Arkansas and dug some up. Planted them by the back fence that got the full summer sunlight and heat here in Houston's bad soil neighborhood. For several years they came up every year and spread. Finally running out of good nutrients and died. But I still remember the resilience of that tiger lily that we transplanted.

I really love the way this lilting, rhyming poem moved and moved me with its beautiful wording and praise of the owl.
In my youth, when I hunted, owls were considered chicken killers and hunted mercilessly. I shot at one great horned owl at too great a distance to hurt it one time, but otherwise listened to and observed owls. From one young great horned owl held captive, I learned that the mother brought many birds, of all kinds to feed it, not mice. Birds caught probably sleeping at night.
In winter, the hooting may be mating calls. When I hunted squirrels in January in a woodlot, although it was often below zero, I saw in the distance. They built their nests and had chicks as early as February. Long before other birds that migrated came back.
