Too Funny. I think all of us have been afraid of the unknown at some point in our life. The dark, strange noises, deep water and yes, even outhouses. When I was young and had to sit down in an outhouse, my greatest fear was snakes- I tried to watch between my legs to make sure nothing was moving. Great Story.

Nice bit of science fiction-horror. It isn't often that the monster is a technological innovation. Yet, I remember as a kid having to use outhouses once in a while. I don't recall freezing in one but in those days I moved very fast and didn't have to sit very long. The stink alone would cause some to faint and conjure up some kind of devil in the place. I remember most during the summer when the flies would also be unbearable.

I like the poem. Why: it is not a "romantic" description of the dragon fly but it shows realistically the struggle to survive that every living creature faces.

And not just the animals, the citizens of Florida are being overrun by Snowbirds from the Northern climes.........and from the south, the illegals.........it's rare to find a native Floridian anymore. I have an Aunt in Bradington (formerly a Buckeye--see?). Sad, Texas is being overrun, too.........I moved here 24 years ago, but consider myself (mostly) a Texan. A powerfully poignant piece, well written.

This is happening all over the country and not just Florida. A sad and hurried pace. I see forest animals foraging in the suburbs having been force from their natural habits by man's progress. Super Highways built over quaint country roads making long enjoyable Sunday drives a nightmare. Gigantic Supermarket and Retail Chains replacing our nostagic Mom and Pop Variety Stores. When will it all end ? Progression will eventually kill us. Love the write and your sentiments are right on.

I am not fifty (YET), but I am aheadin' in that general direction (in ONLY five years...GASP, where does ALL the time go??)! And am already sufferin' from arthritis pains....GRRR!! Stupid arthritis...Can't get around as well as I used to; therefore I write! (And work, so I can pay my bills! GRRR! LOL At least I HAVE a job; many people don't, especially IF they're older OR disabled~)
I love this; this is precious! Thanks for growing old gracefully (wish I were; my mind is like a kid, but my body is telling me otherwise..you're gettin' OLD, lady...)! May I do the same when I reach 50 in five years...
