What a beautiful poem. Reading it brought tears to my eyes, so well you expressed what we at first thought was loneliness, only to be faced with ourselves, the stranger in the mirror that becomes our best friend. This journey was powerful to read. I felt an appreciation for all those who help others veering towards suicide. I got this image of a solid dark space and the work involved to loosen it up breath by breath. A feat indeed when the suffering one is being suffocated and can't even move a muscle!

What a way to describe the benefits of a situation that most find distressing. But I sense a sense of great loss also in the poem when that significant other is missing. Gone with the arrival of the virus that separates us from loved ones, either in quarantine or in death.

Hunkering down, finding isolation, and safety away from others runs counter to our nature. But I am happy to know that you are alive and well (I hope). Reads like you have a lot of pent-up emotion to release in remembrance of your mother.
I have been watching "Naked and Afraid," and thought of it when you wrote about "relaxing in the peacefulness of nature." While our lives seem to be caught up in the moment with much rushing around and constant challenges, we are so blessed to have mothers to guide us and modern society sustain us. For if we truly "live in nature" in the way that they portray on that reality television show, it quickly becomes a frantic struggle just to survive to the next day. Not peaceful and romantic at all, but very painful and life-threatening at every turn.
Thank goodness for the hectic, but very easy, lives we lead. Thanks to you, Mom, and all our moms before, who suffered so to bring us to this point.

The ups and downs of love over a long period of time, can mean many things to someone. Love in the young is expected and viewed differently than one who has experienced many facets of the heart.

I know it will seem not real but I really loved her then and it was stronger that ever when we met again after over fifty years. Some are, infatuation, romantic hints and gestures, deep romance, love-hate jealously, and the list goes on and on... True love is unconditional love and that is extremely rare. My marriage has moments of that but it's far from perfect as is life. Still these moments are to be cherished. I pray that your moments of unconditional love multiply and exceed your wildest dreams. When you wrote of the "cruel and fickle wind," I immediately thought of the groves of Live Oak that grow here in South Texas. These oak take on a character that seems driven by the wind, as they bend away from the shore for as long as 500 years.

Your poem has it all, from all the goolie creatures that the imagination and media can emote, to the scary fun that kids have on the streets filled with surprising doom, to the commercialization of it all.
Got me thinking about how literature in Hollywood has created much of what Halloween is today with new scary creatures being invented all the time. The latest is costumes made to look like pot plants and cigarettes for little kiddies to wear proudly and show off their knowledge of these wonderful things.

Reading your poem touches me Isabella. The world is full of a lot of people with the 'superiority complex syndrome.' They would rather put anyone down who they don't consider to be on their league. Sad but true. What i have always believed is never to give up nor be offended. I keep going even when a door is closed on my face. All i ever desire is to be exactly as i was created to be and that's final. Sorry for my long comment but your lovely poem deep stirred my heart. WE ARE BORN INTO THIS WORLD AND FROM THE CRADLE WE ALL BEGIN TO 'LEARN'...WHAT THIS WORLD IS ALL ABOUT. WE CONTINUE TO LEARN, ALL THROUGH LIFE, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOOD AND BAD BY COMING IN CONTACT WITH THE OTHER 'PLAYERS' ON THIS WORLD'S STAGE. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THIS POET TO ADDRESS THIS WORK WITHOUT SEEING IT THROUGH THE EYES OF THE CREATOR OF THIS WORLD. FOR IT IS THROUGH HIS LIGHT THAT I CAN SEE CLEARLY AND WHAT I SEE IS THIS; NOTHING HAPPENS BY MERE CHANCE. EVERY EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN PRE-ORDAINED...FOR OUR GOOD. WHY DOES THE BAD HAPPEN? IN ORDER THAT WE MIGHT LEARN TO TRUST OUR CREATOR AND REALIZE THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GO THROUGH THIS WORLD WITHOUT GOD...AND HIS LOVE. THE NEGATIVE ELEMENT IN THIS WORK NEEDS TO BE PITIED, EVEN THOUGH, YES...WE DO GET ANGRY WITH THIS SORT. HOWEVER, HE HAS A PURPOSE BUT HE IS ALSO GOD'S CHILD AND HOPEFULLY, WITH PRAYER, WILL ONE DAY CHANGE. UNTIL THEN...LET'S AFFORD EVERY PERSON THEIR GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO EXPRESS THEIR TRUE FEELINGS (RIGHT OR WRONG, GOOD OR BAD), LIKE YOU HAVE DONE IN THIS WORK. I accept your criticism with humility. However, the poem was and should always be, simply humorous. I have been told that the photo was inappropriate and that I probably shouldn't have used Africa instead of some mystical place. But these are the problems with trying to write humor.
I will quote Abraham Lincoln badly. "You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time." And I can certainly be a fool, sometimes. It doesn't bother me because I accept it as normal.
Just picking fun of our human fallacies and predilections… No particular bone to pick. I literally chose the word because it sounded like other words like quark or crank and it didn't have any meeting before I started to write and those terrible thoughts appeared.
I have just written a similar poem for Saturday and am now rethinking whether I should post it or not and get back to sweet, ethereal, or musical poetry. I write poetry to bend my mind and improve my vocabulary for writing novels. I have no intention of becoming a great poet. You have confirmed that. Thank you.

I usually reduce it to "God gave us a brain and he expects us to use it" in response to all suggestions that God will fix everything, all we have to do is ask. You have quite eloquently shown the bigot his or her proper place--below the level of ignorance.

Great insight into life between the birth and death dates shown on gravestones. Yes, much of that little – is unknown, but with Twitter and Facebook, blogs and other social media, someday that – will be able to be scanned for a complete, unabridged, biography of the deceased for everyone to scan and learn from. Many mistakes that we have caused in the past will be corrected because they won't be repeated in the future.

This is a type of poetry that is difficult for me to grasp, but the Oscar gives it life and the grand ending is the reward you receive as an achievement that stands out above the rest thus the painting of a ladder depicts the climb to get to the top. At least that is how I see it.
