Allow me, the author, Chinchu has a marvelous facility with the English language together with an insight into life, perhaps life well beyond her years. Further, Chinchu commands attention with simple, yet skilfully expressed adjectives. I enjoyed reading her work as it flowed like a live video. Well done !

An interesting insight into the problems that occur when people move from their cultural center to new ones, as well as the age-old problem of the generations, especially with change becoming so rapid worldwide that older generations feel left behind.
So many families seem to wait until a deathbed before old wounds are healed.
Would be much easier to read with a thorough editing.

I agree with Eva. I think you could have made Alex more compassionate and understanding. He, too, was caught up in cultural/religious inconsistencies.
However, based on a little bit of experience I've had with men from India, there is a sense of superiority, arrogance and mistreatment of women that still persists.
I found your story a bit difficult to read. If you could get a good editor it would improve your story a great deal. There are places where your meaning is not clear and even opposite from what you would want as a result the way it comes across.
I've been fortunate to have two couples, friends from Mumbai (Bombay when they left India) who were from mixed religion marriages. The one couple happily argues to this day and the other couple divorced after she got her MBA and a good job with Microsoft in the States while he was studying for his doctorate. Both met in college in India and were not part of arranged marriage.

Your story is inspiring by instilling hope and encouragement for women to break from cultural traditions and follow their dreams. You created a strong character in Mira. Frankly, I don't know what she ever saw in Alex, whom I found extremely dislikable and insensitive.

An interesting story about government interference in education. We have grade inflation in the United States and a push forward program called No Children Left behind. It was the brainchild of a fine fellow (I know him personally) but not a very scientific theory and therefore has backfired with much cheating and scandal.
When I taught in universities I had many students. It is strange, but I remember only a very few and would be embarrassed if one of my former students came up to me and I did remember him or her. Fortunately, I did remember one who approached me a few years ago as one of my best students.
Your story could use some more editing to make it more readable. The Indian way of saying things is okay. There are some other typos and so forth that should be taken care of.

Very unique and creative. Trying to imagine what it would be like to have a voice in the womb and early childhood.
I have a fairly good memory of my life, but I cannot remember anything before about four years of age. That will forever be a mystery to me. It is not a mystery to those of us who read your story.

With the extended family rapidly dissipating, and divorce prevalent amid the elderly living much longer many ailments partially subdued, but still slowing them down, there seems no room some elderly in homes.
My mother moved to assisted living two years ago. It has been traumatic because she's had three roommates because of incompatibility between her and her roommate. She was forced from the first home to another recently. At least now she has her own room and is making friends. It's a shame that no members of my family are willing to take her in.

A heartfelt poem that speaks the life of many old folks nowadays.
Like a child begins his/her first date in school, afraid of the unknown, an old folkie goes into nursing home to begin a new life with the same feeling. The experience will be the same, you will meet many new friends around your own age, and have your own life.
I have watched a movie called "A Simple Life". It's a Chinese movie with English subtitle. Played by Andy Lau, and Deanie Ip. I've even written a review on this beautifully-made movie. Going to nursing home may not be as bad and horrified as some of us envisioned it to be. The movie talks about a wartime child orphan who was adopted into a family of three generations, and lived through 3 of its generations, creating special bond with each family member. At the end the surviving family member helps her walk into a nursing home to begin a new life for herself. I have posted the review to this movie in my "short stories" section.
