Informative and exceptionally well-written!
Mildred Stallworth’s book Leading Effectively will not disappoint. She writes that great leaders have vision and get others to buy into it. Outstanding leaders possess strategic thinking and have the ability to influence, encourage, inspire, motivate, persuade, and empower others to embrace the vision and contribute to it. Proven leaders understand the people they are leading in order to take people where they want to go, creating an atmosphere where people feel appreciated and rewarded.
To leave a legacy that others may embrace and follow, a great leader develops the gifts of those who are on the team developing the vision set forth. The author writes about leaders, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader”.
The author makes so many salient points, such as great leaders make sure any message being given is received with fullest clarity. To hear and to listen are sterling traits a leader possesses. They admit mistakes. They live their lives with integrity. They know how to critique without shaming.
The author is very thorough about so many aspects of leadership and she makes the book so readable, especially by interspersing the text with meaningful quotes. I especially enjoyed the words by Ronald Reagan, "The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things." And I also had an “Aha” moment reading a quote by McArthur, "A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the quality of his actions and the integrity of his intent."
I enjoyed reading this book and found it exceedingly useful in giving me tools and understanding to further develop my leadership style. This is the promise of the book, that it is a guidebook to shaping and enhancing anyone’s leadership skills to become not only a very competent leader, but an excellent, even exceptional, one.

I haven't read your book and probably won't, because I don't find self-help books to be very useful in my life. From the brief reading here, I believe you have defined leadership very well with qualities that I admire. I believe that leadership is a quality that is probably more genetic and less behavioral than people would like to believe. And sometimes, leadership is a matter of opportunity. For example, when an alpha leader dies and makes a leadership position available to someone who was not thought to be a leader before.
I have been a good follower and right-hand man for a number of leaders. I moved forward with the ones who are fair-minded and trustworthy. I stalled with those who were climbing the hierarchy through the use of Machiavellian techniques. I don't think that kind of person should ever be given a leadership role.
I don't think our president meets the requirements that you have written.

I read this book from two specific perspectives-
firstly, as a organisation development practitioner and secondly as a student wants to learn about leaders and leadership from others' experiences.
Purely as a student one would find this book more than adequate to address the basic understanding of the subject that has been well assimilated and served in a very simplified manner.
My take, on the other hand as an organisation development professional is that the book could have touched upon some critical concepts like 'Mentoring, Coaching and Group leadership' which I suppose are in vogue presently.
In my view this book is recommended for entry level students who wish to have a basic understanding of the subject..

Some good information for people, but racists have a great deal of difficulty recognizing their own racism. I find a number of writers here who are making money catering to the worst kinds of hatred. Pres. Obama to be a particular target for these haters. I think in time, his presidency and courage will be seen as a turning point in our society.
While I have been tolerant of the behavior of some people of color toward me during my 30+ years working in predominantly black institutions, in the end it is behavior that frames much of our view of others. For example, my partner, who is Asian, doesn't think of herself as racist, but she has strong opinions formed from her experience with people of color coming to her shop. Almost daily, she comes with the story about people behaving badly and trying to cheat her, lying or acting lazy in her presence.

Some great advice for struggling mothers who are thinking about a business at home. Actually anyone thinking about a business at home. Studies have shown that nine out of ten new businesses fail within a couple of years because of the lack of skill, financing or other attributes. So, juggling family life and business makes it even more difficult.
While reading, I was reminded of Lillian Gilbreth, who in the early 20th century raised 12 children and lived under the shadow of her husband until he died and she got her doctorate and took over his consulting business. She is the subject of the biography by her children, Cheaper by the Dozen. Dr. Gilbreth was a master of organization and scheduling. It takes that kind of focus to be successful in a home business.
