Sustainability could be traced further back than your definition. I think that domestication of grasses and farming created the first sustainability, allowing people to stay in one place and produce food that would last through periods of drought and poor crops. Unfortunately, farming is now one of our biggest sustainability problems, destroying the natural soil that we rely on for our food sources.
You are right about our habits, so removed from nature that we are accelerating the destruction of the ecosystem to repair and replenish itself. I have been called a "liberal" many times for my views. Actually I am an arch conservative because back as early as high school and what I learned from Boy Scouts, I've always practiced minimal use of everything, thereby saving a great deal of money that others spend on wasteful, expensive activities to gain them little except to show off, rather than conserve. If Americans lived like people in the Third World, much of the sustainability problem would disappear.
