It takes a tough skin to be a writer. Especially when around English teachers and literary critics. But we have to perfect our craft through trial and error and should not let trials and correcting errors stop us from continuing.
After all, the landslide didn't bring Stevie Nicks down. She got more famous. ;-) Why should a snowball?

Yes, the consequences of losing. And now, the consequences of all of the dog tracks shutting down. Recently I've taken to singing "Camp Town Races" a little ditty from two centuries ago.
"Went to the races with my hat caved in, came back home with a pocketful of tin…"

A very dreadful visual image, and then the feeling of loss you have expressed so well.
Nostalgia can be a pretty bad thing because it deprives you of living your life in the present reality.
