Wow! I just finished Protector last night and it is a fantastic book! Protector is SO good on so many levels. It's like poetry in places, the way Laurel Dewey writes. There's a depth to the writing that I rarely see in fiction anymore. The deep, deep conflict and pain of the main character, Detective Jane Perry, is so real. Laurel Dewey has created such a deeply woven story of people who strangely interlock. I loved the relationship Jane Perry has with the child, Emily Lawrence. Their connection was beautiful and the story that emerges out of their relationship is nothing short of profound.
On a more mundane side, Dewey effortlessly wraps up all loose ends in the story and does so in a realistic manner. But the heart of Protector is Jane Perry and her often heart wrenching personal story that kept me glued to the pages of the book. I didn't want it to end! And that, more than anything, gives Protector a four star rating!!
I'm eager to search out other books by Laurel Dewey and I really hope she does a sequel to Protector! She's got a winner in this one!

Okay, I'm not a fan of psychological thrillers and typically not into paranormal stories. BUT PROTECTOR totally captured my attention from the first page until the last.
I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of the book because it's not out until January 1st. But, seriously, this is one really good story with characters you care about and root for. Her main character, Jane Perry, is truly flawed but I like characters like that. If they're too perfect, I can't relate to them. She's the kind of cop I'd want on MY side if I was in trouble. Very cool.
As far as the story, I can honestly say that I didn't know what was going to happen in PROTECTOR until the last few chapters and then there's another freaky twist on the last few pages.
Laurel Dewey is one of the best writers I've read in years, and I read a lot of current fiction. Her story is amazingly intricate and her dialogue is superb. Protector would make an awesome movie.
I would give PROTECTOR five stars if I could. Read it. You'll love it!
