This could be a true story. It happens too often. It definitely doesn't seem to fit the action/thriller genre of the usual dramatic fiction.
Well written except, I believe, that the smell of fresh blood is not a stench. That comes much later.
A good twist would be to find that the baby was injured, but not killed.

That was just beautiful and I can relate with my present husband! He is truly my soul mate and I've "kissed a lot of frogs" to finally find him! I can sense the feelings you put into these words and share the joy from finding true love again. BRAVO!
