An excellent story line the enthralls the reader. I could barely put it down. Quiet a page-turner.
The story starts out with teenagers, Butch and Micki, eloping and their quickly growing family. Ending up young and with six children the story evolves. The wonderfully detailed character's descriptions of each child paints a vivid image in the reader's mind of each child.
the book continues following the family's ups and downs and the numerous long distance moves that they embark on.
This memoir covers their life's as described through many years of memories of their marriage and the children as provided by Micki Peluso through flashbacks. The novel shares the good and bad times reflecting a very good and bad marriage with numerous ups and downs including the children...until tragedy strikes and one of the children is hospitalized and in a coma. The family comes together immediately to support one another.
'And The Whippoorwill Sang' is a fabulous book that offers the reader a romance novel, a crime drama novel, a life story novel and an attribute on children novel. This book gives us love, hate, romance, crime, heartbreak, frustration, young love, marital struggles, a haunted house and more. There is drama, comedy, tragedy, but mostly...love!
Micki Peluso has an unique writing style that draws the reader in and holds them captive, I couldn't put the book down, reading straight through. You can't go wrong with this one. I highly recommend you pick this one up. A marvelously, well-written book that should be on the top of your list. Micki Peluso has me hooked! I can't wait to read additional works by her. A super thumbs-up.

This author truly has a gift for storytelling and obviously a remarkable penchant for putting that story to paper with ease. This family's story is one that should not be forgotten and lessons to be learned for all throughout.
I am not usually a fan of writings where there are flashbacks but that format is the only way this story would have emerged as wonderfully as it has. They help the reader become invested in the entire family by understanding who everyone is and their personalities and how they grew into the people they are.
This book follows the Peluso family through the reality of feminism, abuse, poverty, expectations, and death--the good and the not so good.
Any one who has been faced with a tragedy has had their life flash before them but this author writes about it very eloquently. She has a writing style that has the reader examining their own lives.
A slow-methodical timeline has the reader feeling as though they know this family intimately and can visualize everything.
For any parent that has had to sit by the bedside of your child during an illness or accident, this book has put into words some of the emotional upheaval you may have gone through.
Be prepared to spend a few hours digesting this heart wrenching story. Thank you for your courage in sharing your story with the world. This is an edition every family should have in their private library- great resource.

I really enjoyed this book. I felt as though I was reading Ms. Peluso's personal diary, in which she shared glimpses of her life from the time of her marriage through an awful loss for their family.
The thing that struck me most about this book was that is was a true-life tale that didn't hold back from raw honesty. The Peluso family is far from perfect (just like every other family) and Micki represented them in all their faults and failures, which made them all the more relatable and lovable.
Through reading this book, I felt like I knew this family, like I grew up with them. I suffered through the loss of their daughter due to a drunk driver. My heart broke as a mother when I read the heart-wrenching hospital scenes that were scattered throughout the storyline.
As I have grown older, my book tastes have changed and I find myself much more drawn to real life, rather than fiction. "As the Whippoorwill Sang" is as real as it gets. I'd highly encourage reading it.

I was so touched by this book. The author did a masterful job taking me on a journey through the history of her family interweaving the hard times with the light times. She does this while also describing her heartbreak facing a position no parent wants to ever be in with the coming loss of one of her children whose youth is torn away due to a strangers selfish decision. She keeps her promise to her daughter that her name will not be forgotten and that others will know her more as she lived than how she died. It's a book that I believe showcases more than any other book I have read on the full impact such a loss is on a family and I believe it should be a recommended read to any recovering alcoholic involved in a dwi incident, I think this book is also a testament to how a family goes on after the loss of a loved one and how the loved one can "stick around " to care for their family.
Ultimately, there is nothing really I can say as a criticism of this book. the only thing I had a hard time with was remembering the birth order of her children which is a very minor thing. I admire the author's strength and courage in writing this memoir and wish her family the best in everything.

This book is truly hard to put down! Micki Peluso's memoir "And The Whippoorwill Sang" is a true tale about two people very much in love, often struggling but at heart loving every minute of it to raise a large family. Sometimes there is desperation and grief when children fall ill or tragedy hits the family, and there is frustration when the day-to-day struggles of parenthood exhaust both parents, but largely, the book is filled with absolutely hilarious tales of their family life. Be prepared to laugh out loud and tear up at other times!
The story unfolds in flashback format, beginning in 1981 in the hospital when their beautiful 14 year old daughter, Noelle, is fighting for her life after being hit as a pedestrian by a drunken driver. The story of Noelle's final days in the hospital and Micki's struggle to be the loving mother that she is until the very end of her child's life, briefly interweaves throughout the book in intermittent short chapters. The flashback and family story begins with the eloping of Micki and her handsome husband Butch in 1959 and moves slowly, tale by tale, up to and past the time of Noelle's death.
I read this book during the week of a major surgery of a close relative in my own family and it helped me so much. When I first started the book, I thought that perhaps I should have waited to another time to read it and that it was going to be stressful, because it is ultimately about the tragedy of her daughter Noelle. But, as I read Micki's memories of motherhood and the many beautiful, sometimes worrisome but mostly totally humorous experiences of raising her beautiful and large family, I was able to also reflect upon my own parenthood days and the lives of my own children. Micki writes with such genuine feeling and humor about her own experiences that she allows the reader to have the space to relax and relate their own life when they felt the same way. It was for me de-stressing, meditative, and enjoyable to read.
This book is not just about family and parenthood, not even just about grief of a mother and the tragedy of a beautiful child being killed by a drunken driver and the need for tougher laws to deter such recklessness, but more profoundly it is about the eternity of the soul. Micki reveals many experiences throughout the book that she and the rest of the family have with spirits of people who have passed on and she shares this same communication and understanding of eternity about her own daughter who has passed on. It is in that way, a book with the universal theme of hope and this feeling of hope is left in the hearts of the readers. I highly recommend this extremely well written, 5 star book.

If one mistake caused you six surgeries, and you contracted two bugs while in the hospital, I can see your concern about hospital stays.
My 22 day stay in a hospital a year and a half ago that saved my life by lung surgery was quite different from earlier hospital stays where I was treated quite badly by nurses who had no concern for my paralysis. However, had I not had my attendants come in and do some necessary tasks, my stay might have been much different. One nurse even hinted to one of my attendants that she was sure that I would die. Guess I prove her wrong. Both doctors and nurses were quite enthralled with my books and one nurse confided that she was marrying the grandson of Mme. Chang Kai-shek whose mother was a former Hollywood star and wanted to write her experience.
The hospital had a high rating and was entirely different from an earlier stay about seven years before. I did pick up a severe rash on my back that dissipated after I returned home. The hospital food, while more cafeteria like than my usual diet, was quite good, so I ate everything in sight surprising the nurses who were used to having fickle people refuse to eat when sick. Still, I lost weight and muscle tone because of inability to move like I do at home.
A couple of typos of note:
I would say [doctor]/nurse. Doctors are no more important than the nurses. Burst has only one s. "… I have to tell a new and experienced nurse said he needs… [?]"

Thanks for your assessment of your hospital stay. It was informative and well-stated. On my first hospitalization 64 years ago, I spent about a week in the hallway (no room elsewhere). I contracted a severe cold, and had to deal with nearly every visitor that passed by. The food was so bad I hid it in pages in magazines that I did not read. I was so relieved and thankful when I left about 8 days later. Yesterday I returned from my latest admission. I had a private room, separate temperature controls, color tv, private bath, and round the clock care from a highly competent staff. All were female, so I flirted with reckless abandon. Perhaps they believed I was in an advanced stage of mental deterioration. So much the better! I ordered meals from a menu, each prepared and served as in the better restaurants. My attending physician ran more tests than I could count, administered every prescription precisely on schedule, and even listened to my stale old jokes with good humor. My doctor, in good humor, stated "I hear you want to stay here for 2 more weeks. Is that right?" I scratched my head and said "Could you make that 3 instead?"

Very well written description of our plight. Most people are becoming aware of the problems, but feel quite helpless to change anything, and do what they see others doing. Many even resent regulations designed to help everyone change their habits, saying that they want "freedom" to do what they like.
I recently saw the documentary, The Corporation, free on Snagfilms.com. It was explained that all life plunders (hunts and gathers). Humans have been more successful at this and have upset the balance of nature (great diversity and depth) by reaching a population estimated to be 10 billion by 2050. Corporations with no ethics except to create wealth and pass on hidden costs (degradation and pollution) to future generations, have become so successful at plundering that most of the world depends upon corporations to survive… A very dangerous strategy.
We have to do much more than plant trees on Arbor Day or celebrate Earth Day with token gestures if we are going to save the ecosystem in this century.

My twin brother and I were born on December 21. The only problem with that was that we all got single gifts for our birthday and Christmas. Of course, we were grateful, because mom and dad, while not rich, always gave us a wonderful Christmas experience and the gifts were very well thought out and always wonderful to receive… Not just throw away toys… One year we got a whole World Book Encyclopedia as our only, but fabulous, gift.

My own father died when I was but 4 years old, a happenstance that saved me from making poor choices in his honor. Fortunately, I married well, so my wife guided our 4 children around the tradition of buying "hideous dated ties." Many times over the past six or seven decades--including just this past June--I've been honored on Father's Day with a wonderful home-cooked brunch prepared by my loving daughters who color at least one waffle blue for me just as I used to color pancakes blue for them on the Saturday mornings when they were kids and I was "Dad in the kitchen."
My Dear Micki, as you can see, your very interesting article stirred up many memories for me. You're certainly right about one thing: Mother's Day is a time for sharing love and honor whereas Father's Day is more a time for "recognizing dear old dad" and getting it over with.
But I love and support the tradition of shared family life, even as I surmise that the breakdown of the family unit in America is one of the major tragedies that gives birth to lawlessness and disrespect by our unguided younger generations. How sad.
So, reluctantly, I continue to support, "Another Father's Day--Another Tie."
Thank you for sharing your viewpoint of wisdom and experience.

I'm not sure it lived up to your challenge at the beginning. I was expecting a kid maybe in a raccoon costume. And even an old dog and a fat cat would certainly be alerted to a raccoon scratching.
I think it might have been more terrifying if it was a mental condition because those are the most horrible for those that have them--seeing things and hearing things that are tormenting but are not really there.

I love this piece, Micki.
I'm looking at it from the viewpoint of one who has been married to the same woman for over 61 years. I know that to succeed in an enduring love takes not only dedication and commitment but trust, understanding and forgiveness.
None of us is perfect, and that includes your spouse that at one time in your infatuation stage you thought approached "perfect." But if we trust our own feelings and judgment, then we shouldn't second-guess our prior judgment in choosing a mate at a time when a personal challenge arises and you discover (again) that your mate isn't perfect either.
If you harbor the concept of "growing old together"--which I highly recommend because I've lived it--then you must live by the lesson taught in your "Love's Renewal."
You know and understand and have lived drama and personal challenges. Your "Love's Renewal" allows us a unique opportunity to learn by someone's life-changing experience.
Thank you for sharing, Dear Heart. This work is a treasure.

Here is the "official" take on limericks from an internet site on the subject of said poetry:
What's a limerick?
A limerick is a poetic form that can be particularly fun to read and to write. Limericks are often humorous, mean-spirited, or pornographic. I'll explain the form, and you can decide how down and dirty you want to get.
Limericks consist of five lines. The rhyme scheme is aabba. In other words, Lines One, Two, and Five all rhyme with each other, and Lines Three and Four rhyme with each other (in some limericks, Lines One and Five end with the same word and rhyme with Line Two).
Here's an example of a classic limerick by Edward Lear, where the first and last lines rhyme:
There was a Young Lady whose eyes,
Were unique as to colour and size;
When she opened them wide,
People all turned aside,
And started away in surprise.
Here's another example by Lear, where the first and last lines end with the same word:
There was an Old Person of Dover,

This is the first piece of yours that I've ever read, Micki. And it's absolutely wonderful!
In my long life, I've suffered a number of quite tragic and hurtful "events." But I do believe none has been as soulfully painful as losing a child.
In "Heartache," you share eloquently with us and truly touch me.
And from an editorial viewpoint, let me express my appreciation for the mechanics of your poetry: the metre and rhythm of your lyrics and the sheer ease with which I feel the words flowing from my mouth as I read your pain aloud. I especially felt a personalized connection with your loss when you shared with us, "Her name, though not important/Rings out as if a bell/Nurturing a love so constant/The name she bore...Noelle."
You've given me a hunger. I must read more of your work!

Outstanding! You've told this story well, bringing some enlightenment to readers of how hopelessness takes over a life. Since I began volunteering one day a week at a Pregnancy Care Center, I have met more downtrodden women, who come to the Center for help in providing for their families. It's a real blessing to be able to reach out and extend love and care for them.
You might like a poem I wrote recently called "A Glimpse of Hunger," although it's a sad one, too.

This is a beautiful poem, which shows such deep emotion and pain. A thousand tears could never wash away the tears that you have cried. You lost a daughter, and you lost part of your heart and soul.
