Feeling ill or depressed with no apparent cause? You must read this! (Article) - 5/30/2020 5:37:53 PM
I can't believe the description of solanine sensitivity/poisoning you just wrote! I've been struggling with an identical problem for almost half a year now (Actually I think I've had this for a decade, but going very strong this year), went to doctors and all seems normal (Sadly, I could not describe what I was feeling as well as you did), so they referred me to a psychiatrist, which I didn't go at the end (yet). I kept researching by my own and wrote a food diary for almost three months; A vague hint showed relation to tomatoes and potatoes (a daily staple in my diet), however I didn't stop eating them as there was not a clear "next day symptoms" pattern. Guess I'll try with potato avoidance... Thanks for sharing this! for the first time in years I found someone to relate to, I feel a bit less insane now.

Feeling ill or depressed with no apparent cause? You must read this! (Article) - 5/12/2012 3:13:30 PM
Mr. Jackson, I read with interest your article on nightshades and gluten. I am also wheat intolerant and severely allergic to all nightshades. I did not discover this until I had been so sick, I could barely walk let alone function on a day to day basis. What happened to me was that I had a hyper-thyroid that was destroyed and within in a couple of weeks I was hardly able to walk and had tests run to find out if I had ALS. I was also tested for RA and a host of other muscle disorders. That was in 2001 and only until I went to see an Acupuncturist in 2010 did I figure out what was wrong with me. He told me that I needed to stop eating wheat and all nightshades. I had heard of nightshades but never researched them. Once I did, I was amazed at what I found. Solanine never really leaves your system like most toxins do. It builds up over time in one of two places, your thyroid or your stomach. I believe that when my thyroid was destroyed, all the solanine toxin stored in my thyroid was released into my system causing me to become severely ill. I have been nightshade free for two years now and I am still trying to recover from the effects. I try my hardest to eat gluten free foods but unfortunately, most wheat gluten in substituted with potato starch. Alas, to me wheat is the lesser of the two evils so I try to eat that in moderation. Also, a book I read by Dr. Childers informed me that "modified food starch" is potato starch. I have had to look at every label to make sure I am not eating solanine. I hope that this message finds you well and thank you for researching this dreadful disorder that most people do not believe exists. Sincerely, Carolyn Poulos
