When i was ten years old, My family moved from west texas, to central texas. To a farm about fifteen miles from the nearest town, Our closest neighbor lived five miles away. The house we moved into, was built mainly of logs. But over the years, more rooms were added out of rough lumber. The house was old, and weathered but strongly built. The year was 1920, and we had a hand pump in the kitchen,so we had running water ,a first for us. We moved in november ,so we could be set up in time to plow the fields befour spring planting.
Three weeks after we moved in. At breakfast one morning, dad told us ":boys dont be trying to chop wood at night " : Even tho the moon is full it's still not light enough to chop wood. Frank, the oldest of us boys told dad " it wasnt me, I hate chopping wood".So do we Joe and i muttered togeather .Well it sure wast the girls dad stated. Two days later mom complained to us, That who ever was cleaning out her cook stove, to do it befour midnight tho she appreciated it ; it was disturbing her rest Again we all denyed diong it . Soo n we all heard it wood being chopped and the fire box on our wood burning cook stove being cleaned out, What made it so disturbing was it happned only on the first three days of the full moon The rest of the time we heard nothing. After six months, dad told us one evening after supper' WE have a full moon tonight boys. So tonight we are going to find out once and for all. What, or Who is causing these strange things to happen.
The girls and mom went to bed as usual, but we set around the kitchen table playing dominos drinking coffee and milk. I was getting sleepy. when a quarter to twelve we heard it wood being cholled. Dad lit the lanterns he handed one to frank, the other to joe picked up his shotgun. we tooped out to the woodpile , When we got there , ,There was nothing to see we could still hear wood being chopped , but dads ax was still in the chopping block. it never moved, yet wood was still being chopped I was so scard i was shaking ,Dad put his arm across my shoulders and gave me a resureing hug saying its alright Will Theres nothing there.
Bu-bu- but i hear it i stammered . I do to son ,dad said as we headed back inside .I was the first to enter the kitchen, and i froze as i whimpered in fright. The others crowded in behind me,As we watched the eyes lifted off the cook stove, the ashes, raked out of the fire box,and scooped into the ash bucket, but there was no one there at least on one you could see.
Needless to say Dad moved us.
