A well known museum opens its doors to a dozen guest, by invitation only, for a preview of its latest acquisition.
A multi millionaire has agreed to loan a priceless ruby to the museum for one week. The ruby is uncut . It is a pale red colour, one of its kind and bears a strange resemblance to a strawberry. It has been nicknamed the strawberry gem.
It had taken the museum curator more than two years to convince the millionaire to allow this preview. The millionaire was naturally concerned about potential loss. He agreed to the viewing on the condition that he would personally select the security guards and all waiters.
On the night there were 12 guests, three security guards,three waiters and the curator of the museum. The guests were served red wine and strawberry shaped snacks, identical to the ruby.
Among the guests are: a diamond expert on holidays from South Africa, a rival millionaire who was unsuccessful in bidding for the strawberry gem, a retired policeman, a magician , two politicians and various film and television personalities.
The event was a big success. It was only after everyone had left that the curator realised the ruby had been stolen. It had been replaced with one of the savouries that were being served throughout the night.
There were no handbags, mobile phones or cameras allowed in the room.
The guests were accompanied by a security guard, for a 3 minute viewing.
The ruby was displayed openly. It sat on top of a black velvet cushion.
The waiters did not go anywhere near the ruby.
The curator walked around and spoke to everyone throughout the night, answering questions when needed.
The food trays were prepared in advance and brought into the room before the guests arrived.
