A Valentine’s Day Story

“I don’t have anything to decorate my box with”. Chris whined to his mother.  It was one week till Valentine's Day and Chris’s family could not afford much since her father had been laid off. But laid off or not Chris needed to take a decorated box and gulp Valentine's Day cards to school. He  was near tears when his father said, “Don’t worry I have an idea.  We will wrap your box with paper bags, next take your crayons and color the box.”

“Okay” agreed Chris. “But what about the cards?” he asked.  Chris knew not to ask for money for something so frivolous as Valentine's Day cards. 

His mother answered “You can cut the left over grocery bags into the shape of a heart and decorated it with your finger paints.  I will make a bow with left over string to add to each one.  

Chris liked that idea, and a week later when he took his homemade cards to school, many students said that they were the best ones they had seen. For Chris had taken extra time to make each one unique to the class mate that was receiving it.  His mom even got permission to bring home some peppermints from the doctor’s office where she worked, so each card had a red and white peppermint glued to the front.
