This week, Studio Reader Stan gets another call from his mother.
Studio Reader Stan’s phone rings and he picks it up.
Studio Reader Stan's Mother: Studio Reader Stan, it’s your mother. I’ve got some fabulous news.
Studio Reader Stan: Congratulations. What is it?
Studio Reader Stan's Mother: I’ve been asked to rewrite a script. The producer and director didn’t feel the previous writer was someone who could deliver the goods.
Studio Reader Stan: So this producer and director decided to bring on someone who’s never actually written a screenplay before to do their rewrite?
Studio Reader Stan's Mother: Yeah, they heard I had access to Scandinavian film financing.
Studio Reader Stan: Wasn’t that the financing company that was supposedly going to make your inexplicable story about the caveman and his best friend, the snowstorm?
Studio Reader Stan's Mother: Yep. The very one. They loved it.
Studio Reader Stan: So why didn’t they film it?
Studio Reader Stan's Mother: If they had any money, they absolutely would have.
Studio Reader Stan: So they’re a financing company with no finances?
Studio Reader Stan's Mother: Hey, everyone has some minor flaws.
Studio Reader Stan: Uh huh. So anyway, what is this new project?
Studio Reader Stan's Mother: It’s something called, “The Team,” about deaf kids winning a soccer championship.
Studio Reader Stan: Mom, that’s my script.
Studio Reader Stan's Mother: Oh yeah, that’s why I was calling. They wanted me to tell you you’re being let go. They found a new writer.
Studio Reader Stan: So they’re replacing me with my mother, who not only has never written anything, but whose ideas don’t even make sense?
Studio Reader Stan's Mother: Yes, and I’ve already made several changes. Instead of the kids being kids, they’ll be aliens, and instead of them being deaf, they’ll be sleepy, and instead of them playing soccer, they’ll take lots of naps.
Studio Reader Stan: Gee, and I thought your ideas didn’t make any sense.
Studio Reader Stan's Mother: I’d appreciate it if you didn’t rain on my parade. Can’t you be happy for your mother?
Studio Reader Stan: As much as one can be while being betrayed.
Studio Reader Stan's Mother: Thank you. That’s all I ask for.
