This short story has Poe-like horror elements - even 'speculative fiction' elements. It explores the sometimes strange, obsessive relationship authors sometimes have with their characters. I wrote the piece after spending a number of years studying French 19th century literature and undoubtedly the story's mental rhythms owe something to that body of literature.
