when mark and his twin brother split in thier early childhood days, neither of them thought they would ever see the other, because they both were suppose to be dead. However when mark met his new friend Ryan, he begins to unravel the dearing truth.
“.....and what made them do that,” ask Ryan
“I don’t know,” replied his friend Mark. “I’m still trying to find the answer to that question.”
“O.K. Mark calm down, tell me what happened, from the beginning.”
“O.K. well the night it happen I was supposed to be home by eight thirty, or that’s what I was told, but that’s not how things turned out, knowing that it’s been fifteen years and I still haven’t return home as yet.
“Oh. So that’s why you are here? The reason why I’m here is pretty similar, but I’ll just listen to your story, before I tell you mine.” Said Ryan.
Mark and Ryan have been friends for the past two weeks, because Ryan arrived two weeks ago. But Mark was here before, a long time before, more like fifteen years before. However Mark doesn’t think that’s too long, being that other kids are there for almost 18 years now. All their hopes as been lost, but Mark still had faith. It was funny how he as been there for fifteen years and in all that fifteen years he had met no one who he really likes, and in just two weeks he met his best friend Ryan.
“Well,” Mark started. “They told me it was raining that night, very hard, my parents were invited to a play, but they didn’t wanted to go because it was raining so hard. My dad told my mom to leave us, with the babysitter, but since we were just 9 months old and my mom didn’t trust anyone with us, she wanted to take us.”
“Who is ‘us’ are you talking about th.......” Ryan started, but was cut off by Mark, whose eyes were glistening with tears.
“No, I’m talking about my twin brother............., yea I was a twin, but he..........he....... died that night, I felt it’s my fault, I should have helped him. But how was I suppose to, I was only nine months.......just like him.” Mark was now crying, it’s the first time he had cried in the fifteen years that he had been here
“wh...` what.... happen?” Ask Ryan.
“I’m not sure, I just remembered what they had told me.” Mark lift up his head and looked up in the dark sky, there were a few stars to the north east of their building. they were sitting outside on the steps leading into the buildings, it was late and they were the only ones outside, off in the distance he could here the late night train grumbling, as it made it’s way over the north end of the Lake.
“What did they tell you?” Ryan asks.
“They said that, my father wanted to leave us with the babysitter, but my mom told him that we could be home by eight thirty if he allowed her to take us, So he agreed. When they left the house me and my little brother was sitting in our child seats facing the rear end of the car.” Mark stopped, and wipes the tears from his eyes. “The road was wet and it was cold out, so ice had started to form on the road,...........they said dad lost control of the car on a bridge.........., and skid over the railings, and fall in the icy lake water......., almost twenty feet below.”
Mark began to sob again, this time making no attempts to hide it. “I was the only one to make it out alive, my brother, my mom.......and my dad died. They said when the paramedics get there, the car wasn’t completely submerge, and my mom had me on shoulder in the car, with my head barely above water.” Mark looked over to see Ryan sobbing also. He wiped his eyes, “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to make you cry.”
Ryan looked Mark in the eyes, both of their eyes were filled with tears. Ryan opened is mouth to speak. “......who told you this Mark?”
“The old Lady, she told me an my twelfths birthday.” Mark replied.
“They lied to you Mark.” Ryan said still crying. “That is the exact story they told me an my twelfths birthday, next Tuesday I’ll be fifteen and..........”
“That can’t be, next Tuesday I’ll be fifteen two.” Said Mark, now turning around to look suspiciously at Ryan.
“I know that old lady is lying, no........ maybe she doesn’t know. But who would do such a thing?” Exclaimed Ryan.
“What are you talking about Ryan?” Ask Mark.
“I think we are brothers......, about that car accident that’s the same thing they told me, only it was my father who had me in his hand with my head slightly above the water.”
“So where were u all these years, why were you just send here yesterday?” Ask Mark.
“My foster parents told me they adopted me two weeks after the accident, and if I wasn’t I would be sent to this place, where they would have treat me like garbage, but my adopted parents died two weeks ago that‘s why they send me here.” Ryan turned around to face Mark, “Let’s go to that old lady and ask her about it.”
When they went inside all the lights were off except for the one in the old woman’s room.
They went in there and told her of their suspicions. She was very fascinating, plus she always treats Mark very nicely, so she agreed to take them to the facility’s nurse, who was just getting ready to leave for the night. She collect samples of their blood immediately, even though it was late, she said she would inform them of the result in the morning.
The boys left and went to their room; they didn’t get much sleep that night, because they were so anxious. Ryan looked out the window and saw over in the horizon, the sun must be rising because the sky as that reddish orange look. He touched Mark on the shoulder; “Let’s go it’s time.” He said.
The two boys left and went down to the old lady’s room. However she wasn’t there. They walk around the main office and saw her inside talking on the phone with sum faxed paper in her hands. She turned her head and saw them. Outside the sun hasn’t come up completely yet and the other kids wasn’t awake as yet, and the building felt so good, with an early morning imagery to it.
The old lady was smiling as she put down the phone receiver. “It seems like you guys were right, I made a call to the program that Ryan was originally registered in, before he was adopted. It turned out he had a twin brother who also survive the accident, but had to be separated, because his adopted parents didn’t wanted both child. So they took one of the boys, and the other was sent here........ But I’m still not sure if it was you that was send here Mark. Let’s go down the hall to the nurse and see if we have a match on those D.N.A.
“So the accident is true , there was really a crash?” Ask Mark. The old lady confirmed the accident, and told them that both parents had died, but the father was holding one of them above the water in the car before it sunk, and the mother was holding the other.
They were all in the Nurse’s office know, looking at the letter with the D.N.A results, The nurse and the old lady was smiling, while Ryan and Mark hugged each other as tight as possible for almost three minutes.
“Let’s go brother, we have a lot of catching up to do.” Said Ryan, as they walked off with tears of joy in their eyes, the nurse and the old lady, also with tears of joy in their eyes, watch them disappear out of sight around the corner down the hall.
