Hometown sweethearts Eddie Colvert and Sarah Monroe face an uncertain future following the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. When Eddie joins the Army, Sarah reluctantly agrees to postpone their spring wedding and prepares to face the holidays without her steady. Unbeknownst to her, he's arranged the surprise of a lifetime with friends and family before he leaves for the war effort.
She hated for their special evening to come to an end. For a few sweet hours, she and Eddie had managed to push away the rumblings of war and pretend that kamikaze bombers hadn’t come between them.
“You look so beautiful tonight,” Eddie whispered against her ear as they walked to his car, bundled against a rising wind that carried fat white snowflakes. “I’m glad you bought that dress. It makes you sparkle.”
“Thank you.” She felt beautiful, cherished. Unaccustomed to finer things, this pale green, high-waisted dress had caught her eye in the store window a few weeks ago. “I just hated to spend so much money on something so frivolous.”
He ushered her to the car, shut her door, and slid in beside her. “I think it was worth every penny. I have a surprise for you, Sarah.”
“Something more?” she asked. This wonderful evening gifted her with more than enough memories to carry her through his enlistment. He’d moved heaven and earth to get them into the fanciest restaurant and bought her this gorgeous dress. He’d run out of money any second. “What are you talking about?”
“Do you trust me?” His blue eyes glowed with anticipation.
Her heart fluttered on butterfly wings. “With my life.”
For me, A Kiss on the Wind brought to life the joy and fear of lovers during war time. Although set in the WWII era, the story reflects two sweethearts during any war. Kudos to Ms. Kindall for capturing the essence of such love in her short story. I highly recommend A Kiss on the Wind. -PS
Marty Kindall captures the mood of the post-Pearl Harbor period in her story. There was a feeling of loss and anxiety, but also a sense of duty to their country and believed in what they were doing. This story is a wonderful tribute to love and romance in an era where it seemed that anything was possible if two people only loved one another. -LC
Warning! Tissue Alert! This is a very sweet story about war and peace...and finding them both at the same time. This story shows that when true love abounds, nothing can break it's bond. -TN
What a sweet story. Set during the stressful (time) just after Pearl Harbor, happiness is found by two young lovers. So sweet! Well done, Ms. Kindall! -CL
