This is a training officer's evaluation of the mood of rescue personnel post 911 and the Oklahoma City Bombings.
Let me just say, having been around all the men and women who were called upon to view the horror and the resolve of their fellow firefighters and rescue personnel to "take care of business" immediately after the devistation of both of these situations, I am humbled. These are by far some of the bravest and strongest people I know. They do their jobs with little question; many of them at risk of their own lives and well being. I need not repeat a lot of what you have heard before but just say that it taks special people to do a special job like this! I was a fire chief in a small town doing a good job when a friend of mine who is a consultant himself asked me if I would be interested in training company officers on how to set up incident command structure and teach company officers how to respond to various types of situations like that? My response was of course yes, i would be interested. It led me to a great meeting in lancaster pennsylvania with many of my fellow collegues in the fire industry and of course to some of the top minds in the business. This was the tip of the iceburg as it turned out and became a career in itself just raveling around and meeting people from all walks of life involved in this business. because of the 911 incident, and oklahoma City, the threat of terrorism on the horizon, everyone wanted to know how to protect their communities. Both large and small communities jumped on the band wagon and became sensitive to the needs of everyone asking the question' can this happen here?" Of course the answer is yes as witnesed just the other day in Virgiania Tech! I was pleased to work with many of the people involved in all the developmental tools and to learn myself as I was teaching others how to manage the mechanics of an incident in a way that allowed all resorces to work together. This may sound strange but it is hard for different agencies to "let go" at a scene and allow those who need to be managing to do so. You will see a vast change in the future from what is happening today in these areas to what will happen tomorrow. it will be for the better but never perfect. I no longer teach command school but rather work with our youth at the high school level and find it hust as rewarding. These young people have a pretty good grasp of the reallity of the worl around them and wil be the hope of our future. Give them a chance and I think we will see some exciting things out of them!
