As Annie Jo and Larry listened to the news one night in 1953, the reporter talked about the NAACP and white people's feelings. Many whites were upset because the NAACP dared to take the separate-but-equal doctrine to court. He'd interviewed a few people to get their opinions about what the organization was doing. One high-pitched nasal white lady said, "I don't really understand what nigrahs want. They have the same things we have, but they're still not satisfied. They want more. Why should they want their children to go to school with ours when they have perfectly good schools in their own neighborhoods? I don't want my little girl attending school with nigrah boys. Why, one of them will probably try to touch her in the wrong way or say the wrong things to her, then all hell will break loose. It's a known fact that nigrah males and females have loose sexual habits. It's part of their nature. I'll tell you, in all sincerity, I'm afraid of them. They're from the jungle, and bringing them to America and exposing them to Christian white folks didn't take the jungle out of them."The reporter asked, "How do you know? Have you ever spent time with Negroes?"

"Well my Lord, no! My husband would kill me if he thought I took myself anywhere near those people. I know people who have been around them, and they'll tell you that they're nothing but devils. I don't want to have anything to do with their kind."
