Bill writes a letter of appreciation and love to his daughter, who is turning 11 years old on Christmas Day.
December 23, 2003~
Dearest Ronee':
I sit here, with pen in hand, and I ponder the memories that flood my brain as I think about you. In just two more days, on Christmas Day, you will be turning 11 years old.
Eleven years old. My God, where do all the years go?? It seems like only yesterday when you were first brought into our lives as a tiny, sickly baby with serious health problems; but you have managed to grow into a breathtakingly beautiful young lady who is teetering on the edge of teendom!
Ronee', you have brought us, your family, so much joy and hope, and you have shown us what it takes to be a true survivor! You are brave and tenacious beyond your years, and God has gifted you in so many ways. You have a brilliant mind that classifies you as a genius, and you do so well in school! And you have such a beautiful singing voice that has been known to move people to tears! When you sang "O Holy Night" the other day at church, I was so proud of you; and I couldn't help but be mesmerized by your ability to handle such a hard song! Yet, you nailed each note perfectly, and you had several people in tears! You have shared your singing talents with many people across the south, and several big stars in country music have recognized your talents and see you as a future star to be! Yet, despite all the successes you have had as a young singer, you still remain level-headed and down to earth, and this is the way it should be!
When people first see you, they see your disabilities; but once you start singing or sharing your testimony or ministering to them about Jesus, your disabilities are immediately forgotten, and soon, people are amazed at your bright and curious mind, and they are amazed at your ability to discuss various topics that most people do not understand, such as the Bible. You have managed to memorize the Bible, and if you wanted to, you really could be a good preacher woman! You aren't ashamed or afraid to share your faith in Jesus Christ, and when people see you, they clearly see the Love of Christ shining on your face and in your eyes; and they know that you are a Christian by your loving and compassionate nature. You have a very big heart, and you often put the needs of others before your own; and I know that isn't easy when you are suffering yourself!
You have endured much physical hell in your life; yet you shine with heavenly hope, and you don't let your handicaps or your present health woes get to you. You just grit your teeth, bite down, and strive to go on, and when you ARE down, you are never down for long (MOST of the time; there WERE a few times that were rather scary, such as the time you had your stroke three years ago on your birthday or the time when you were injured in that bus crash when you were such a little baby and was in a coma for three long months). You struggle to return to normalcy through each health scare, and you have a spirit that absolutely refuses to be broken! You had surgery only this past July, but the way you zip around on your crutches and leg braces, most people don't even know you even HAD surgery UNLESS they know about it or see the faint scar on your knee, from when it was replaced; you get around better now than you ever have prior to it!
Now you are turning 11 years old in just two short days, and I know you will like what we got for your Christmas Birthday. It is something you have wanted for a very long time; but you will have to wait until CHRISTMAS to find out what it is! And I KNOW you will be pleasantly surprised!
You are now nearly a teenager, and I know there will be many more challenges ahead of you, but if I know you as well as I do, I know you will triumph over each and every obstacle that may come your way! You are a champion, and you are a WINNER in our eyes; and I hope you will always remember that! We are so proud of all your accomplishments, and we are so proud to be your parents! You are a special young lady, and we couldn't have asked for a better Christmas present than having YOU for a daughter! So Happy Christmas Birthday to you, Ronee', and may your Birthdays ALWAYS be BRIGHT and MERRY, just like the Christmas Season itself!
