You probably wouldn't like my dad, especially when he gets drunk.
Unfortunately, this is an occurance that happens quite often.
My dad drinks. He is an alcoholic, and when he drinks, he is not like himself. Now, when he ISN'T drinking, my dad is a very loving, gentle man, but put a beer or a bottle of booze in his hand, and it's like he changes into a totally different person. When my dad is drunk, he turns mean and nasty, and he also hits anyone who happens to be near him. He has belted me a time or two during one of his drunken rages, and once he bloodied my nose and also my mouth. He also curses at you, and you can hear him shouting obscenities halfway down the street when he gets this way.
It is very scary to be around my dad when he is drunk; and my poor mother is walking on eggshells because she never knows when dad is going to go on one of his drinking binges. My dad was working, but then he got hurt, and he had to go on disability; and ever since, he has been depressed and has taken up drinking. My dad used to work at a car factory as a shift supervisor; but one day, he fell, and he hurt his back and ended up having to have surgery, which did NOT turn out as well as expected. Now he is always at home with crippling pain, and this is one reason why I think he drinks, so as a way to numb the constant, nagging, sharp pain in his back. The only time he ever goes out is when he goes to buy beer or wine, even though he says he is looking for another job; but we know better. He ends up going to the store to get booze, or he goes to Joe's Tavern again, to hang out with his bar buddies, which is usually what happens. Then mom or I wait for that call, where the bartender is asking us to pick up Eric (that's my dad) again, as he is falling-down drunk and is too drunk to be able to drive home by himself.
Now, when I was little, dad was a really cool guy. We'd play sports together, watch the Superbowl on TV when it came on every winter (and root for the better team), and build model airplanes and ships; and he and I got along famously. Then came that day when he was hurt, and then the surgery and then the lengthy recovery period; and this was when he became depressed and took up drinking. Now he is a shell of his former self, and he has let himself go; and it is no longer fun to be around him, especially when he is on an alcoholic high. As I said earlier, dad turns mean and surly, and he has been known to get into fist fights with other men (or with me), and he has hit mom more than once. The police have been called to our place because dad's drunken rages disturb our neighbors. (We live in an apartment complex.)
I am embarrassed to admit that my dad has a problem with alcohol; it's something I would love to keep hidden, but when he comes home cussing and smelling like a beer factory, this problem can't be hidden very well; and I wish then my dad would just die because I can't stand it when he gets like this. I am also helpless because I have offered to get him help with his problems, but all dad does is yell at me and makes me feel worthless; and then I am sorry for ever bringing up this. I feel like a victim with nowhere to turn, and it is driving our family apart.

Once upon a time, I bartended at a place like Joe's Tavern in your story; and I saw the terrible effects this disease has on many otherwise decent souls.
