A man walks across the country as a way to bring awareness to people who have multiple sclerosis.

Tom Whitt's the name, and walking's my game.

I have started on a cross-country journey, as a way to bring awareness to others about people who have multiple sclerosis (of which I am one who does).  I have had multiple sclerosis for the past ten years; it's caused me to have spasticity and weakness in my legs, which is why I walk with two crutches.  It's a pain, but it's something I have since learned to live with and accept (though, at first, it was anything but easy).

I live in Phoenix, Arizona, with my wife, Clarabelle, and our sons, Mikey (7) and Paul Jacques (5); they have joined me on this walk (excepting Clarabelle is driving our family travel camper, and the boys are riding; they wanted to come with me to show their support, and in case I run into trouble).  I am a stockbroker by trade, but I have taken a year off to train for this event, which started two days ago.  I am now in eastern Arizona, heading towards New Mexico; hopefully my journey will take me to the Gulf Goast, and then up the eastern seaboard; I will then trek across the Midwest, to the Great Plains states, and then head on back west, towards California, and, eventually home.  This trip will probably take at least a good year or so (depending on circumstances); it will be a long, hard journey.

Especially on two feet, not to mention, two crutches.

I have wanted to do this for the past five years; I have undergone numerous training sessions and took part in several marathons/running events, as a way to get my body in shape for the task at hand.  I am now in prime physical condition, even with having multiple sclerosis.  While my legs are still weak, my heart and spirit are willing, and so this is why I am doing this.  I hope to raise awarness for the needs for people who are in my position, and I hope that people will reach out and help those who have multiple sclerosis or any similar diseases.

I know the weather will be rough on parts of my journey, so I have plenty of umbrellas, rain gear, sunscreen, heavy winter jackets or clothing, et al, as a way to adapt to the ever-changing weather conditions.  If the weather is stormy, I will probably spend the time in a motel or in my camper until the bad weather subsides, and I can pick up where I left off on my walk.

My friends at work and my neighbors have scoffed me numerous times about this, but I am determined to show them that just because I am disabled, I can do things if people will only give me the chance.  I am very goal-oriented, and nothing has really stopped me.  If I want something, chances are I will work hard until I get it.

Well, I am going to continue on my walk; you will hear from me time to time as I partake in my journey cross country.  Pray that all goes well, and pray that people will be willing to help those who need it the most.  I would greatly appreciate it!  Thanks in advance!

~Sincerely, Tom Whitt, person with multiple sclerosis.

Good luck to Tom. Overheating can be a real problem, hope he takes precautions. Patrick

"..."Have Crutch, Will Travel..." is the kind of attitude which many disabled have and that give them the strength to squash under their feet any self pity.

Dear Karen Lynn, I read this beautiful story and it shows how much you know about multiple sclerosis. It shows that you have a lot of imagination and are endowing your hero with a strong will and determination to succeed and not give up. Looking forward to see the continuation of the story. Love, Emile.

Karen, I haven't been on AD much lately, but your stories still have the sense of reality, and you do a marvelous job putting yourself in the characters place. This was an excellent write.
