About one of the younger members of this special family, told in her own words.
My name is Sun-Hee Acadiana Elizabeth Sandusky, and I am 6 years old.
I am going to be in the first grade. I will be going to Eastview Elementary School. I don't know who my teacher will be yet, but last year, during preschool, my teacher was Miss Becky. I really loved her. She taught me how to read and write (in Braille; she has a blind daughter, and so she knows what it is like for me), and she also taught me how to tie my shoes and how to get dressed without putting on my clothes backwards.
I live in Nashville, Tennessee, with my family. I have a very big family, with lots of brothers and sisters to play with. I also have a mommy and a daddy, and there are also cats, birds, and dogs in my family.
I am blind. Or WAS. I had an operation to help me see, but my eyes are still not good, still can't see much besides light and shadows. I have always had problems seeing, and because of it, I use a cane to help me get around, and I read books in Braille. I write in Braille, too. Sometimes people feel sorry for me because I can't see well, but it really doesn't bother me much. Still, other than being blind, I still can play like any other kid, and I still love to have fun!
I love to go swimming, play with my ball (my ball beeps; it lets me know where it is when I kick or throw it), read, go on my computer (my computer talks), play with my dollies and my toys, sing, play the tambourine, and dance. I dance clog-style, and some of my older sisters and I dance together as part of a clogging team. We clog at festivals and fairs, and it is a lot of fun. They help me. They help me go where I need to go, since I can't really see all that good anyway.
I am a pretty girl (or so I have heard!). They say I have long, black hair, brown eyes that tilt up, a pretty nose, and wear glasses. They say I am skinny and little for my age.
I was born in Korea, and I was adopted when I was about one year old. When I was one and a half, I had my operation, and I can see a LITTLE. They replaced my corneas or something like that. I really don't know WHAT they did, but I always could remember NOT seeing, and now I can see a LITTLE. Still, I don't see good, and this is why I am still called "blind" by a lot of people, and this is why I still sometimes need help in getting around obstacles and stuff, so I don't fall or hurt myself.
I am a very happy little girl. I love to do many things, and I love my family. I am very happy because my mommy and daddy loved me enough to adopt me as their own little girl, and I now live in America. I love America because she has such a pretty flag, and she is the Land of the Free. I love that: being free!
I am also very happy because I have Jesus, and I love learning about him in Bible class at church every week. I have many friends at Bible class, and I love the music at church. Sometimes I get to go on the stage with the choir and play my tambourine while they sing; and I really love that!
