A short story about my wife's famous pralines ("Prayer-Lines"), which have been given to many noteworthy leaders, including President George W. Bush.
A few years ago, when then President Bush came in town to Baton Rouge at a fund raising function for someone running for an open Senate position held at a private, plush expansive residence on Highland Road near the Santa Maria Subdivision, we certainly would have loved to attend but couldn't afford to pay the $ 250/person rate.
So my wife, Maria, and I drove down to that beautiful venue and surprisingly were able to get in, as we said we just wanted to drop something off for the "Pres." After driving around and seeing all the fancy dressed up attendees - even noticing some well know public figures - we were told to give the box of pralines ("Prayer-Lines") addressed to Pres. Bush with our name and address on it, to someone; we did that and then we drove off.
A few hours later, we got a call with East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office noted on our caller ID, so I answered not knowing what that could be. The caller reported that the Secret Service (SS) wanted to know what was in that box, as the fellow I had given it to apparently had just put it down on the grass near "a bush" and forgot about it.
We told him, "It is just pralines in the box!" I told him that I would come back if he wanted me to, as we lived not too far from that area. He said, "No, that's not needed!"
About a month later we did get a nice official letter from then President Bush thanking us for the pralines. I wondered how many of those dozen of pralines that the Pres actually got, as I'm sure the SS had to do some "taste testing!"
It should be noted that other famous individuals have been given Maria's pralines, including Pope Benedict XVI and Billy Graham. Maria will sometimes include the following note to remind praline recipients to thank God for all blessings:
"Before eating, thank God for a prayer answered recently. 'God loves a cheerful giver!' (2 Corinthians 9:7) Be grateful, God loves you!" - Maria Horcasitas
what a nice story and quite an interesting one for your family. life is good when we apply ourselves-as did your family-but heck being a good cook doesn't hurt either does it. :0
