Moving into a new house can be a scary ordeal for a small child. Everything is new. The scents, the layout and of course the bedroom. But what happens at night when that child lays awake, hearing every little creak and moan of loose floorboards? What about the closet that draws the helpless eye? And then there's the staircase that sounds like someone is walking up to the child's room, the footsteps that seem to approach the bed. The child looks and tries to see but nothing is there. The blanket goes over the child's head as he or she strains to hear over their own racing heart. The child's breathing fills the cramped space. Sweat beads their brow. Finally, the child gets the nerve, throws back the covers and goes racing to their parent's bedroom, begging to sleep in protective arms. But mother only sighs, smiles sadly and leads the child back to their own bedroom. But the ordeal is far from over as the child tosses and turns. Exhaustion leads to sleep. Somehow morning comes, chasing away the shadow of night. All is well in the light of the day. But night is destined for return.
